Today feels a little bittersweet as we process our final batch of Cornish Cross chickens here on the farm.
I’m excited about the changes ahead, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t also a little nervous about closing this chapter.
Before anyone gets worried, we are NOT stopping chicken production—we are simply changing how one part of the process is handled. As I got everything ready this morning, I want to thank everyone who has continued to support our farm.
As many of you know, the demand for our chicken has grown beyond what we can currently supply. Over the past several months, our selection at the farmers market has been limited—even during processing weeks.
Some people would call that a good problem to have, and I agree. But it is still a problem that needs to be solved.
The farmers market has played a huge role in helping our farm grow into what it is today. Because of that, it is difficult to arrive with coolers that aren’t full and feel like we may be letting down the customers and community who helped us get here.
Processing the birds ourselves has become our biggest bottleneck. Even after streamlining the process and considering extra help or more frequent processing days, we realized none of those options offered the long-term solution we needed. After a lot of thought, we have decided to begin working with a reputable local USDA-inspected processor.
This change will allow us to raise more birds, offer a more dependable selection, and better meet the growing demand. As well as open new doors for our chicken.
While the processing location is changing, the way we raise our chickens will remain the same. They will still be raised on pasture, fed the same corn- and soy-free feed, and receive no vaccines or antibiotics—just sunshine, grass, fresh air, and plenty of room to move!!
We firmly believe this is one of the best ways to raise healthy animals while also improving the soil beneath them. Healthy soil is one of the fundamental building blocks of life.
The main difference customers will notice will be the labels and packaging. The chicken inside will be raised the same way and remain the same quality you have come to expect from our farm.
Over the next few weeks, we will also introduce a new online preorder system, along with box and bulk bundle options, to make ordering easier and give customers more dependable access to the cuts they want.
Customers who preorder before the birds are processed will still receive our current pricing. Once the chicken returns from the processor and is added to our available inventory, prices will increase by about 3% to help offset a portion of the additional processing costs.
This new structure will allow customers to lock in the lower price by ordering ahead while also helping us better plan each batch and keep more chicken available.
This is a big change for our farm, but we truly believe it is the right step forward. It will allow us to grow without compromising the way we believe our animals should be raised.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has purchased our chicken, shared our posts, recommended us to a friend, or stopped by our booth at the farmers market. Your support is the reason we have reached this point and the reason we can take this next step.
Today may mark the end of one chapter, but it is also the beginning of an exciting new one.
