Baby zucchini are on the plants!

If you've been with us for the summer before at all, you know what's in store. There are no gross zucchini over here.

I really do believe that if you don't like vegetables, it's probably because you've been eating terrible vegetables. I'm on a mission to fix that.

The soil matters, the varieties matter, and the growing practices matter.

Farm Friday:

This week was a roller coaster of early mornings, weather, and balancing family life on the farm.

-We fixed mower tires and mowed in spurts with the rain...still behind.

- Harvested the first beets and broccoli.

-Baked cookies instead of going to our Wednesday market in Grayslake that was canceled because of weather.

-Had dentist appointments and tied shoes in every parking lot.

-Doctored a sick lamb. This lamb is being raised as a shoe lamb. We aren't sure what's wrong, but suspect a bee sting.

-Weeded carrots. Always a mind-numbing and monotonous job.

-Took a load of meat chickens in for processing. I'm grateful some of them are gone so we could secure their mobile home better. We were losing one or more a night to an owl who wasn't bothered at all by our livestock guardian dog.

-Enjoyed great weather at our Friday market in Lake Bluff.

-Brought home a bin of vegetable tops from market to feed animals and save them from the landfill.

-Moved mobile electric fences every day for the sheep and goats.

Sometimes when I need motivation to keep farming, I just read the news for 10 minutes and I'm renewed in purpose and fortitude.

Farming where we do is kind of weird for me. You can be having a totally peaceful moment and one of the stations on either side of the "country block" we are on can get a call.

The public school is across from us, fields in front of us and further behind us subdivisions building at alarming rates.

And here we are, tucked in the bustle growing local foods, living the farmstead life.
