Some cakes are celebrations. Some are stories. And some are love, grief, and remembrance made visible.
This cake was designed with that theme in mind - love, loss, heartache, and the fact that the spirit transcends life and death.
I painted Van Gogh’s night sky in buttercream, letting it move from tier to tier, but there was one detail I wanted to mean something more.
Van Gogh’s painted sunflowers begin near the bottom of the cake. Then, little by little, they become three-dimensional. And finally, they become flowers themselves, winding upward around the cake toward the moon and the stars.
I wanted them to feel as though they were lifting from the painting and rising toward the heavens—a quiet reminder that although a life can leave this earth far too soon, a spirit does not simply disappear.
And neither does our love for those who have moved on.
It changes. It aches. It carries memories where moments used to be. But it remains—woven through every sunflower, every moonlit night, every beautiful thing that brings them rushing back into our hearts.
This was never just a Starry Night cake.
It was love and a life, and a spirit that rises among the sunflowers into the starry night.
