A key takeaway from the 2021 US Hop Report:

The new USDA report shows strong growth within the U.S. hop industry, good news after last year's numbers. Hop production for Idaho, Oregon, and Washington was a record 116 million pounds in 2021, an 11% increase from 2020. All three states combined for a record 60,872 acres harvested, up 4% from 2020. 2021 yields approached historical averages up from a challenging 2020 growing season.

Hop Contracts are important, but there are lots of reasons to use Spot Hops, even for bigger breweries. Some reasons are:

1. You just opened: New breweries often forecast modestly, so the spot market is a low-risk way bolster hop supplies.
2. Expanding production: The spot market can help you ramp up production while you work with your supplier to increase your contract volumes.
3. Innovation: Buying smaller hop amounts makes it easier to experiment with new styles or make small batch releases.
4. Low inventory - Spots hops are a great stopgap if you misjudged your needs.
5. A Popular recipe - A wildly successful beer can really cut into your hop inventory. The spot market can supplement your needs and maximize sales.

Happy New Year! 2021 was a productive one here at Crosby Hops, filled with great milestones, a successful harvest, giving back, a farm expansion and of course great beer! We’d like to thank our customers, grower network, staff and community stakeholders who helped make it happen. Some highlights include:

1. Another successful hop harvest!
2. Built a new, state of the art bailing facility
3. Completed our first full season of TopWire Hop Project which featured Straturday, our One Year Anniversary, a TopWire IPA signature collab w/ Grains of Wrath, food trucks, live music, private events in the new Backyard, and tons of families, doggos and hoppy beverages.
4. After a year off, we returned to CBC in person this year with our biggest lounge yet, a ton of great collabs, and lots of smiling faces.
5. We teamed up with MxPx, Silver City Brewery and over 25 participating breweries for our Rock On! Project, raising $20,000 for Sweet Relief Musicians Fund. Keep an eye out for Rock On 2022 and how to get involved!
6. We raised another $20,000 for the National Brain Tumor Society, a cause that’s both important and personal to us.
7. After numerous sightings and a wild time no doubt hanging out with Sasquach, our two mascot Llamas (as seen on TopWire merch) were donated to a local 4H club for a retirement life of agriculture education and lots of attention.

We teamed up with for LOTS IPA, a 6.6% Imperial Pale Ale made with Crosby estate-grown Amarillo®, Centennial, Comet, and Strata® hops. Proceeds are being donated to the African American Brewing Scholarship Fund . This beer sings with notes of citrus, pineapple, and stone fruit which is nicely balanced by a soft, juicy mouthfeel courtesy of a and grist.

Flexibility, the spot hop market’s biggest feature! But this flexibility takes many forms:

1. Budget: New and growing breweries need financial flexibility. With spot hops, you buy what you need without a big long-term investment, freeing up valuable capital.

2. Innovation and development: The ability to purchase smaller volumes of hops makes experimentation easier. Through innovation, you can evolve your portfolio to meet changing trends and provide consumers with a new and interesting products.

3. Storage: Space is a valuable commodity in any brewery. With spot hops, you only order quantities you can safely store and don’t pay suppliers a storage fee.

4. Forecasting: Knowing your hop needs in advance can be challenging. With hop contracts, brewers need to predict the varieties and volumes a year (or more) out. With spot hops, just buy as you go.
