Wildlife Sunday

In this week's edition I bring you my favorite pollinator - the plush and bougie bumblebee! This year I have a species of bumbles that is massively large. They really have been loving the petchoa (Petunia-Calibrachoa interbred plants) in my back yard.

The plant is the brand new Petchoa Citranova Lemon Zest from Ball FloraPlant. It has large petunia sized blooms and is so stunning in my combo pots. It has been looking great all summer with consistent performance in the heat. You will see it show up in our baskets next spring. One of the surprising things I love about it - it looks great at Golden Hour. It just shines! And the bees agree!

Wildlife Sunday - Farm Edition!

Special featured "wildlife" Lily Mae, our Great Dane, took a tour with me out to the fields. This year is the first time we have grown whole fields of flowers, at least since I came to the farm in 1996.

In the wide angle shot, with our lovely Cascade Mountains in the back, you can see Ratibida columnifera on the left, and the darker Rudbeckia hirta on the right. The fields were just vibrating with buzz-y-ness from all the honey bees. There was also plentiful small birds - particularly in the rudbeckia. Check out today's reel to hear some of the sounds we captured.

Wildlife Sunday

Pollinators are fascinating to watch. I especially love my bumbles and honey bees enjoying themselves in all the assorted blooms.

Summer is winding down and fall crops are starting to bloom! Here are a few things blooming in the greenhouse right now! Our favorite right now are the stunning new varieties of echinacea we have growing.

Wildlife Sunday

I haven't planted millet in the yard for quite some time, but I am glad I did! It has been providing great forage for my small birds. Here you can see a house sparrow enjoying his breakfast! The other nice thing is that after they feed the millet looks all nice and tidy. They all share the space with the hummingbirds who feed in the salvia in the morning also.

Wildlife Sunday

The hummingbirds are absolutely loving the salvia this year. I have a female and a baby that are regularly out in the raised beds in the garden. It's nice and quiet out there, and I can sit down low and just watch them systematically go from bloom to bloom. It amazes me how friendly and social the hummingbirds can be to humans.

Last week Stacie and Birdie traded the road for the great outdoors! They took a well-deserved camping getaway to unplug, recharge, and to soak up a bit of sun, fresh air and nature.

They are back and looking forward to hitting the road to reconnect with our amazing customers and helping you find the perfect plants for the season ahead!

🐝Happy Pollinator Week!🦋

Here at F&B we want to take a moment to thank the tiny heroes who keep our gardens blooming and our ecosystems thriving.

Birds, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, wasps, small mammals, and most importantly bees do incredible work every day.

Pollinating animals travel from plant to plant carrying pollen on their bodies in a vital interaction that allows the transfer of genetic material critical to the reproductive system of most flowering plants. The very plants that bring us countless fruits, vegetables, and nuts, ½ of the world’s oils, fibers and raw materials, prevent soil erosion, and increase carbon sequestration.

At our nursery we love growing plants that give back providing nectar, pollen, and habitats for the pollinators that help our world flourish. Every pollinator friendly plant added to a landscape creates another stop along their journey and another opportunity for nature to thrive.

This week we celebrate the connections that make growth possible for plants, pollinators, growers, and the communities we serve. Together we're helping create landscapes that are not only beautiful but also support the life buzzing, fluttering, and humming all around us.
