What are some Hobbies outside of work?
Photography/ Video editing and music

How did you get started in the industry?
I started at F&B through a Facebook post

Who/What inspires you?
My inspiration to keep moving forward is primarily God, my family, my coworkers, my leaders and my boss.

What is your favorite plant/ growing season?
I have several favorite seasonal plants. I would say in the spring it is the red Dahlia and in winter it is the red Amaryllis and Poinsettias

The Greenhouses are looking extra cheerful lately! Amazing calibrachoa baskets, bright and cheery sunflowers, colorful coleus varieties, stunning Snapdragons, zinnias, cuphea and petunias! They are all looking beautiful right now. Summer colors everywhere you look!

Today we’re shining the spotlight on one of those individuals. Meet Fili one the team member helping our nursery grow stronger every day.

Spending time with my family.

How did you get started in the industry?
Through a farm contractor.

Who/What inspires you?
My children give me the strength to keep going.

What is your favorite plant/ growing season?
Hops and Poinsettias.

Datura is one of the most fascinating and mysterious plants in the botanical world. This night blooming plant has captured attention for centuries in gardens, folklore, and traditional history.
Native to many warm regions around the world datura thrives in sunlight and produces stunning trumpet shaped flowers which can be white, yellow, pink, or purple that open in the evening and release a sweet scent attracting nocturnal pollinators like moths.
Throughout history datura has appeared in spiritual rituals, ancient medicine, and mythology earning names like Devil’s Trumpet, Moonflower, and Thorn Apple. Its beauty is undeniable but so is its danger.
⚠️ Important: Every part of the datura plant is highly toxic if ingested, including the flowers, seeds, and leaves. It should never be consumed and should be kept away from children and pets.

At our nursery, growing plants is only part of what we do. We’re also proud to grow a strong team. In this Employee Spotlight we’re highlighting Jon Venzke one of the hardworking people who helps make our nursery thrive.

How long have you worked at F&B?
I have worked for F&B since 2008, and this year marks my 18th year with the company.

What are some hobbies outside of work?
Outside of work I enjoy doing landscape photography along with the occasional flower photography.

How did you get started in the industry?
Through Highschool I intended to study Architecture. I enrolled in a vocational course that included landscape design. As a Senior in Highschool I took a part time job at a greenhouse in Clackamas and things just evolved from there.

Who or what inspires you?
At this point in life, I see my grandsons taking an interest in gardening. For them it may just be playing in the dirt, but it’s inspiration nonetheless.

What is your favorite plant or growing season?
For a favorite plant, I would have to say the dahlia, especially with all of the latest breeding that has been done. As for seasons, fall is one of my favorite times of the year. It’s a great time of the year for photography.
