My last post was about the loss of Natasha's lambs. Since that time, we gained two sheep - we purchased Cocoa and Sierra from Heritage Hollow Farm. They're a joy, especially Cocoa - Lisa has fallen in love with her.

Sadly, we've suffered another loss this evening. We don't know why, but Yelena - mom to Pepper Jack and Babybel - was found in the pasture today, already gone. We're blessed in that Pepper Jack and Babybel are already weaned, but Yelena had done a pretty good job as a mom and we were looking forward to breeding her again. Even more than that, Yelena was my (Jeff's) favorite ewe - she just had an adorable face and a curious disposition.

I'm proud of Lisa, who had to bury Yelena on her own. I'm away at Scout camp right now; it seems like these horrible things only happen when I'm away. But Lisa is the whole package - not only is she able to stand toe-to-toe with the academics at her university, but she's able to carry out the necessities of farm life even when tragedy strikes. She's strong and beautiful, and more than I deserve.

The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away; blessed be the Name of the Lord.

Today Natasha lost both of her lambs while birthing. It was very physically stressful on her, and traumatic for Lisa. We're beyond thankful for the help of our sheep mentor Lou Nave (Heritage Hollow Farm), who assisted in the stillbirth and helped us save Natasha.

Pepper Jack, Babybel, and Yelena are all doing well. God is good, even when things are not.

The girls are back! Both of them seem to have yellow markings on their backs... which means 'mission accomplished!' We're also glad to welcome a new wether to Shepherds' Rise, Slush. Last year he made the rounds as a show sheep, and he's just too doggone cute to process, so he's come to live his days with us!

Byala and Boromir get along pretty well. Of course, Boromir is missing two of his sheep friends - they're, uh... spending some time with a handsome fella named Charlie. We'll get them back in a little over a month, and hopefully have some additions in late March!

Everybody gets along at Shepherds' Rise! Well, most of the time, anyway.
