The morning started like any other — dew on the grass, sun just peeking over the trees, and Marvel doing his usual patrol of the meadow.

Right about the time he thought all was well, something tiny caught his eye by the hay bale.

Now, Marvel’s a bull who don’t scare easy… but this little squeaky intruder sure gave him pause. 😆

One week into her new role as a milk cow, Sapphire is already settling beautifully into the routine.

Just a week ago, she was nervous in the stanchion — I even needed a leg rope and kick bars for safety.

Tonight, she practically begged to come in. I haltered her and led her in… not because she refused, but because she thought I’d forgotten her turn!

Poor girl is still pretty engorged, but she stood like a pro through some intense udder massage.

👉 This is why I invest so much time in stanchion training before calving. The payoff? A calm, trustworthy family cow that will be with me for the next two decades. 🐄❤️

Training a Dexter heifer to milk takes patience — but the reward is a calm, trustworthy cow that can provide milk for your family for nearly 20 years. 🥛🐄

In this post, I share how I prepared Sapphire to walk into the stanchion before her calf was born. Getting her comfortable ahead of time meant less “freak out” after calving and an easy transition from heifer to milk cow for both of us.
