Hello, Friends! Did you dream of farm life when you visited Birdsong Hollow Farm? Did you want to live there? Well, the farm is going on the market sometime soon, so this is a 'heads-up!' for you.

The farm is 144 acres of hillsides, hollow and ridgetop, about half cleared and half forest. The view from the u-shaped ridgetop goes on forever in two directions, since it is at about 1200'; the whole watershed, from ridge to creek at the bottom is included. There is a small 2 bedroom, 1 bath house that has been significantly upgraded since we bought it, as well as a small village of cob buildings on another part of the land, a two-room timber frame cabin with a great rocking-chair porch, a small barn and two greenhouses. I'll post more details soon.
The spring runs year-round and is backed up with the two big water tanks that store rainwater in the barn.
If you have any interest in this land, please contact me to let me know. That's the first step in making your dreams come true!

I hope you are gearing up for the 2015 gardening season. For the first time in three years, I am going to grow food this year. I will not be growing plants to sell, though.
If you want some interesting heirloom varieties for your garden, check out Coldwater Farms Greenhouse, which is in the Woodbury area. They grow beautiful hanging baskets, too.

Dear friends,
It seems that the greenhouse chapter of my life is over, as there are other demands on my time now. I will not be growing plants for sale this year.
Thank you for your support, friendship and interesting conversations over the last 5 years. I have thoroughly enjoyed our interactions.
I do not know of any particular place you will find a wide variety of heirloom and open-pollinated plants. If I hear of any, I will post it here so you can check them out. LocalTable.net and LocalHarvest.org are two good places to look.
If you want to order seeds and grow your own plants, look at Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, Seeds of Change, Seed Savers Exchange, and Johnny's Select Seeds. Those companies carry most of the seeds I grew. If there is some variety you can't find, let me know and I will see if I still have any seeds of that kind.
I hope you will continue to send me pictures of your gardens and produce. Happy gardening!

Oh, my! Writer Ken Beck wrote a lovely article about Birdsong Hollow Farm and THREE local papers published it! My photo was on the front page of the Cannon Courier, on the front of the Style section in the Wilson Post, and also on page 4 of the Murfreesboro Post! Plus, the Middle Tennessee Times (Smithville), published an article about the timber frame building this week, also on the front page! Saturday and Sunday were busy in the greenhouse, and I got to visit with many gardening friends, both old and new.

The tomato plants are ready! Our greenhouse will be open for your browsing and heirloom gardening pleasure, starting tomorrow morning at 9 AM. We will be open every Thursday through Sunday from now through Mothers' Day (May 13) or until we are sold out. Don't wait long, since we have grown fewer plants of each variety this year and some will sell out quickly. Get full driving directions at www.birdsonghollow.com.

Come and get your cabbage, broccoli, kale, lettuce and Asian green plants! They are ready for your garden now. I have several varieties of each kind of plant, of course...check the website for descriptions, or just come out and get the information while you are bonding with the lovely little plants. I'm in the greenhouse between 8:00 and 4:00, Thursday through Sunday. See you soon, I hope!

Cabbage seeds have been planted, and broccoli seeds meet the soil tomorrow. Can't you just feel the earth's energy swelling? The elm trees are already blushing red on our hills, just one of many signs that winter is yielding to spring.

The 2012 growing season is almost here! I am working on website updates, so check www.birdsonghollow.com frequently to see what's new for this year. Instead of taking orders, we are listing the plants we will have in the greenhouse. You can buy whatever looks best to you!

We grow an enormous variety of heirloom and other non-GMO plants for your garden. The 2012 selections are being posted daily: tomatoes of many colors and shapes, peppers both hot and sweet, herbs for flavor and health, and flowers to feed your soul and your pollinator friends!

10/15/2011

I've also had good reports about Anna Russian, T.C. Jones, and Blondkopfchen tomatoes and Pepperoncini peppers. Your favorites?

So, how was your summer garden? What varieties were stars and which were flops? I'm already starting to trim down the list of tomato and pepper plants I'll be offering next spring, and your input can make it or break it for some variety! So far, Roman Stripe and Orange Banana tomatoes and Jimmy Nardello, Golden Treasure, and Doe Hill Golden Bell peppers are safe, based on feedback from market grower friends. What else should I grow again?
