"During the Middle Ages, Hungarian peasants, in order to get rid of snakes, moles, mice, rats, frogs, and other pests that were very harmful to the garden, knew no better remedy than... a drunk hedgehog.
It was believed that when hungover, the hedgehog became very angry and merciless towards garden pests and more vigilantly guarded the area where it lived.
Peasants would place plates of beer under almost every bush. Hedgehogs are big fans of alcohol and would quickly gather en masse in the area with the free beer.
The peasants would lock up their dogs at night so they wouldn't interfere with the 'work' of the hedgehogs.
In the autumn, when the harvest was over, Hungary celebrated 'Drunk Hedgehog Day.'
And so, there is no scarier animal than a drunk hedgehog!"
It's quite a creative and somewhat unbelievable method of pest control! I wonder how effective it actually was and what the hedgehogs thought of it all. It certainly paints an interesting picture of rural life back then.
