The group was united under the belief that classic European vines could thrive in the Washington climate and yield fine wines. The results far exceeded their expectations under influential winemaker and Master of Wine David Lake, who joined the winery in 1979. Under Lake, Columbia Winery produced Washington State’s first series of vineyard-designate wines and was the first to plant several new gra
pe varieties in the state, including Syrah, Pinot Gris and Cabernet Franc. Today, Columbia’s forward-thinking philosophy continues to thrive at the hands of a talented and creative winemaking team, led by Winemaker Sean Hails. Situated in the Columbia Valley, Sean and his team let their artistic side guide the way in the Sunnyside winery while experimenting with new grape varieties, yeast strains and oak regimens.
