We have been exploring cover crops over the last ten years as a system to improve soils, conserve moisture, and reduce chemical inputs. Because of the benefits we've seen, we now try to plant cover crops on every orchard acre possible. In the last few years we have also started cover cropping our processing tomato fields.
Right before the pandemic we set up a demonstration plot with Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF) to share what we had learned with others and to have a side by side comparison to measure the differences between cover cropped and bare ground orchard systems. When we finished with the demonstration plot we were ready to plant our bare ground to a cover crop. We were approached by Isaya Kisekka from the UC Davis Agricultural Water Center and asked if we would cooperate on a joint project with UCD and USDA. Last night we attended the Winters Holiday Tractor Parade. Our float turned out great and we all stayed dry thanks to our fabricator Ernesto Casillas' quick work on our last minute canopy. Thanks to our employees, family, and friends who helped to build and decorate our float, and to those who braved the rain to spread the Holiday cheer. We look forward to doing it again next year.
