This is one of those dishes that sound really weird until you take a bite. A modified menu item from Marlow’s Tavern, where I got my start, this was my favorite meal to heist home in a brown box.

Graham cracker crusted, glazed on top with Hershey’s Chocolate, and drizzled with even more Reece’s. Lastly, a little fresh whipped cream never hurt anyone. A peanut butter candy lover’s dream!

Asian-Style Stir Fry. Fresh carrots, bell peppers, and tender, flavorful beef. Later I added: broccoli, edamame, noodles, and shrimp. Bubbling in a rich sauce of pineapple juice, soy sauce, and sesame oil with garlic and ginger.

I don’t have a problem with inauthentic cuisine as long as it’s not pretending to be authentic. I’m not claiming this delicious Stir-Fry as something you would find in Asia but it is inspired by it’s ingredients and flavor profiles. Enjoy!

I’m supposed to say something personal here. That’s part of the post. But I can’t figure out what it should be about! I write my best when I’m in pain. Life is pretty good right now. Spring is here, nobody close has died, I’m not in the middle of a breakup, work is the normal amount of stressful, and my cat is chilling on the windowsill. I 100% believe that we can be okay no matter what situation we find ourselves in, however, boy does it help when life takes a chill pill for a second. Moments of peace and seconds of quiet. I guess you could say, I’m hAppY.

Salad Bouquet with Green Goddess Caesar Dressing. Crisp greens with assorted fresh vegetables like cherry tomatoes, radishes, cucumbers, and sweet peppers. Mayo-based dressing with cheese, lemon, and arugula.

I tried to fix the tomato. It pokes out of the bouquet, pictured above. It doesn’t want to stay perfectly lined up with the rest of the vegetables, triggering my OCD. As I fruitlessly labored to get it centered, our blessed photographer expressed that she LOVES the tomato’s personality. And you know what? So do I. Eager to hop into the dressing, out of the bowl, and into your mouth. Defiant of the status quo and generalization. Forever captured as a symbol of anarchy against blind perfection. You go, little tomato!

Tart Shell. A little flour, butter, powdered sugar, eggs, salt- and the healing begins…

“Beauty is greater than pain.” I rinse and repeat the words under the hot water. I shared a few days ago with you a little of my story and why Gentle Kitchens came to be. Guess what? In this life, the pain never ends! Yeah today was rough, tomorrow will be too. This world is BROKEN and BRUTAL. People are hurting. The suffering, the burning!

Are you still there? Don’t give up reading now. Don’t give up at all. You know why? Because like this crumbly tart, poked full of holes, there is the sweetest flavor to be discovered. Herbed-Honey Butter. Creamy salted butter swirled with fresh herbs, honey, and paprika. Perfect on sourdough toast, biscuits, and pancakes.

This was probably the easiest recipe I prepared for the big photoshoot on Sunday and yet I found myself procrastinating in order to get it done. In my head, rolling it in parchment seemed like a whole ordeal. When I finally faced the paper, I realized the delight it was to roll up the butter like a piece of candy.

I have a lot of moments like that. I avoid, fear, and worry about something that turns out just fine. When I am forced to confront the thing I’ve been so afraid of, I realize that even there in my scariest moment, everything will STILL be okay. Even if it IS catastrophic I can still respond to the big, bumpy rollercoaster of life as smoothly as whipped butter.

Me proudly beaming over a Caprese Dip. Fresh tomatoes, burrata cheese, and basil. Mingled with balsamic and olive oil.

Cooking saved me. My boyfriend died a violent and lonely death in 2021. I was Stricken and lost. Aimless, the world became a wasteland. I had no purpose in an existence full of terror. And then my life changed when I took a bite of buffalo chicken wings with bleu cheese dip. For Anthony Bourdain it was a freshly shucked oyster pulled from the French Riviera or something, and for me, it was chicken wings. That spicy, creamy bite said “Hey, there is a dimension of flavor that exists that reminds us, “Everything is going to be okay.” I took comfort in the fact that things will work out and in the existence of nourishment.

I remember how one of the last meals I ever saw my mom eat while she was still able was chicken wings. She knew soon she wouldn’t be able to enjoy them and she had a way of eating, exclaiming in awe as she really enjoyed the food she ate. She would rant and rave in between her own unique way of munching. I can still hear her chew.

I believe that negative memories can be channeled into positive through creativity. So I cook in order to alchemize my pain into comfort. I cook to hear my mother chew. I cook to reverse the loss of my boyfriend. I cook to create out of thin air the comfort that warm soup brings to a cold and violent winter. And it is my hope that you too are nourished by the flame.
