WHAT'S PICKING ON THE WEEKEND OF OC TOBER 13TH:
If you are looking for a specific variety listed below, we recommend you call us first to make sure it is still available.
GOLDEN DELICIOUS: Grimes Golden seedling? (c. 1890’s)
Golden Delicious is a very popular as a supermarket apple variety, and now undergoing something of a rehabilitation amongst apple enthusiasts who are re-discovering its potential. The variety was discovered by a West Virginia farmer at the end of the 19th century. It is generally considered to be a seedling of Grimes Golden, to which it bears a strong resemblance. The variety was soon taken up by the famous Stark Brothers nursery, who were so impressed by it that they bought the original tree and an area of land around it. The tree lived on into the 1950s, by which time it had become firmly established as one of the world's great apple varieties.
IDARED: Jonathan x Wagener (c. 1930’s)
Idared - the red apple from Idaho - is an attractive apple with a mild apple flavor. Its main feature is its remarkably long storage potential - even in a domestic fridge it will readily keep for 6 months. As a result it has become quite popular, both in North America and Europe.
MUTSU: Golden Delicious x Unknown (c. 1930’s)
Known as Mutsu in its native Japan and in the USA, it looks like a large Golden Delicious and indeed one of its parents is Golden Delicious so it has that lovely sweet honeyed flavor.
FIRESIDE: McIntosh x Longfield (c. 1917)
Large conical fruit. Green skin with scarlet stripes and sometimes a mottled orange flush. Crisp, sweet, juicy greenish white to yellow flesh. Excellent eating apple.
CONNELL RED: (c. 1957) Bud mutation of Fireside
Connell Red is a large deep red apple with an outstanding flavor sure to please your taste buds. The flesh is juicy and distinctively flavored with a sweet taste that is also very good when used in apple pies. This apple is ready to harvest in October. It stores well, lasting up to six months.
JONAGOLD: (c. 1943) Jonathan x Golden Delicious
The coloring is yellow of Golden Delicious, with large flushes of red. This is a crisp apple to bite into, with gleaming white flesh. The flavor is sweet but with a lot of balancing acidity - a very pleasant apple.
EMPIRE: (c. 1945) McIntosh x Delicious
Empire is a sweet apple with a crisp texture and bright white flesh. Although Empire can be stored for a short period, it is best when eaten straight from the tree. It has the characteristic and unusual McIntosh flavor, often described in apple textbooks as "vinous". Perhaps the best way to describe it is like a hint of melon or pineapple or elderflower.
Other Varieties in VERY limited supply:
Corail, Yataka, Snow Sweet, Grimes Golden, Spitzenburg, and Braeburn.
We will also have Sheiko Pears, Korean Giants, and Kiefer Pears inside the barn.
