We have multiple sets of triplets every year from our whitetail but these ones are extra special. All three of these babies came from grade 3 embryos, which is the lowest quality of viable embryos flushed from a doe. Even though they weren’t in the greatest shape, the expert handling of the Advanced Deer Genetics team set our girl Ali up to turn all three of these embryos into some super healthy fawns! Bring on the next generation of breeder bucks and super does!

**Prime Acres fawning season tip

If you have a set of quad or triplets and are planning to pull one or more to bottle raise, pull the biggest not the smallest (unless the smallest is unable to eat from mom). Leaving the smaller, potentially more developmentally behind fawns with their mom helps them catch up to their siblings faster. Even though we give our bottle fawns the best quality milk that we can, nothing is as good as mother’s milk.

Pretty cool rainbow after the storm today! Looks like there is a pot of gold somewhere in our axis pen. Maybe it’s that new King George/Dream On doe fawn 😏

**Prime Acres fawning season tip

Having an idea when fawns are coming is an important part of fawn and doe care. Here are some common signs that does are close to giving birth:
1. Pacing around the pen/walking the fence when the rest of their pen mates are calm
2. Dramatic change in udder size overnight
3. Laying off by themselves
4. Not interested in food or treats
5. Paying a lot of attention to the babies already in the pen

**Prime Acres fawning season tip**

Know the signs of cold babies! These early season fawns born before summer temperatures get here need extra attention to make sure they can maintain body temp. Being able to recognize a cold baby before they become critical is important. The little guy in this picture needs help. Look at the way his head is crooked back, not curled up like a healthy fawn. This is often an early sign of lowering body temps. Another quick check is to use your finger to check the inside of the fawn’s mouth. If it feels cold to the touch it might be time to take steps to get the fawn warm.
