Flakes of hay can vary in weight.

One flake of grass hay can weigh as little as 3lbs, and upwards of 5lbs, so occasionally weighing your hay may help with weight issues in some horses.

Here are a few examples of a grass hay testing at 800 calories per pound. (Per day)

4 flakes at 3lbs per flake = 12lbs and 9600 kcal.
4 flakes at 5lbs each = 20lbs and 16,000 kcals.
6 flakes at 5lbs each = 30lbs and 24,000 kcals.

Weighing hay can be key in managing both over and underweight horses who are “meal-fed” as they may be getting much more or much less than expected. Using a hay net or basket and fish scale or digital kitchen scale is an easy way to get an idea of how much is being fed and should be done on a regular basis (at least with each new load).

Do you weigh your hay before feeding? 🌱

These two hay nets look similar, but they hold very different amounts of hay.

The net on the left contains 2–3 flakes from a regular bale and weighs about 6 lbs.
The net on the right contains almost a half of a compressed bale and weighs over 16 lbs.

That is a huge difference, and it shows how easy it is to accidentally underfeed or overfeed horses when hay is measured by eye instead of by weight.

It is a little like comparing popped popcorn to unpopped kernels — you couldn’t eat the same amount.

Always check with your vet or nutritionist for the appropriate amount of hay for your horse.

🌾 Are you feeding grain on an empty stomach? Here’s why it matters…

Horses are designed to eat constantly, not go long hours without forage.

If hay runs out overnight:

👉 The stomach keeps producing acid

👉 With nothing to buffer it, that acid can irritate the stomach lining

You might notice:

Crankiness or girthiness
Fast, anxious eating
Pacing or discomfort
Subtle performance changes

🌿 Why adding first-cut alfalfa can help

First-cut alfalfa is a great tool for gut health:

✔ Naturally high in calcium magnesium → helps buffer stomach acid

✔ Contains quality protein → supports muscle topline

✔ Higher fiber, stemmier texture → keeps horses chewing longer and feeling fuller

~ A flake of alfalfa overnight or before grain can make a noticeable difference—especially for horses prone to ulcers or that finish hay quickly.

~ Aim to keep hay in front of them longer overnight (slow feed nets, late-night top-up, or adding stemmier forage like first-cut hay).

🐎 Small changes in feeding timing—and forage choice—can make a BIG difference in your horse’s comfort and health!

Every horse is different—check with your vet or nutritionist for what’s best for yours.

I have been tracking my straw bedding usage for the past 25 days and wanted to share an update.

Here’s the scoop:

~ before chopped straw, I was bedding with a combo of pellets and shavings. Total per week for 4 horses was 8 bags of pellets and 10 bags of shavings for a total monthly cost of $606.92 w/tax. 72 bags total. Plus it’s incredibly dusty.

~ for the past 25 days I have used a total of 43 bags of straw for 4 horses. That’s not even 2 bags per day. Cost $604.80 when bought in quantities ver 20.

2 of them are very piggy horses. One dances in it and the other one rolls and drags his feet around. 😆
