Tree of the Day!

Yellow birch are dang near always cool, but this one picked a heckuva spot to lay down roots. Strattling the crick, I suspect that it either germinated on a dead log that has since deteriorated, or the original tree fell over bridging the creek, then reestablished a leader that formed into a beautiful tree standing over this pure and clear crick.

We here at Rugged Ridge Forest love and admire all the trees, not just the maples.

Walking through the woods checking lines and I encountered this gnarly old beech tree covered in evidence of bear activity. Its always cool reading the forested landscape, and this tree had some stories to tell!

Rugged Ridge Forest isnt just a maple orchard. Its a dynamic, wild forest that supports countless critters.

Not the most captivating thing to watch, but here is a brief synopsis of the line checking procedure. Lather, rinse, and repeat thousands of times on hundreds of acres : )

Our most productive winter logging yet! With sap runs in the forecast, we are hanging up our saws while we shift our focus to the maple syrup. As we implemented our forest management plan on another stretch of sugarbush, we removed quite a bit of diseased beech and other unhealthy and poorly formed wood from the understory, while also harvesting some spruce (not shown) which were shading our maples and a handful of pretty nice yellow birch logs. The yellow birch were very abundant where we were harvesting, and we only took those that had some healthy replacements waiting in the understory and some damage which made their 30 year survivability questionable. Overall the remaining stand should continue to be a healthy sugarbush with good biodiversity, while it also welcomes in a fresh understory which should offer good habitat to a variety of critters.

In case youve been wondering what weve been up to... Our maples are all tapped out, so weve shifted our focus to collecting firewood to evaporate our syrup and warm homes in our community. The snows 3 feet deep, but we like our stumps cut low, so its been alot of digging. The cut might appear durastic, but we are primarily culling beech with severe bark disease. This "weeding of the garden" allows more sunlight to strike our maples, while also allowing regeneration of maple and yellow birch in the understory, along with other species like beech, cherry, ash, and some softwood. This boosts the carrying capacity of our forest by creating tender browse for critters to munch on at the forest floor. Its actually a pretty amazing process to be a part of.

Can't make hay when its raining, and you can't log in the mud, so that makes this weather perfect for putting up wood! In addition to the wood required to make our wood-fired maple syrup, we are also selling firewood to our local community. We are now taking orders for the spring, and we deliver from Montpelier to Morrisville.

The Perfect Team! Hilde and Hugo have the power to go up adverse terrain, control to come back down safely, and wisdom of how to apply it.

After their mani/pedi yesterday, we hitched 'em to the groomer for the first time this year (what can I say, weve been busy!), but this honest, earnest duo took the reins like theyve never missed a beat. It's always a good feeling when your team is willing to work hard, and still hangs on your every queue to get the work done safely.
