But until then, it's our other favorite time of the year...PEONY SEASON!! 🌸

A few tips for keeping your peonies as long as possible (because we all know it's a painfully short season 😭)...

🐜 DON'T knock the ants off the plants - they are helping keep the plant healthy!
DO swirl the bloom heads in water before you bring them inside to keep our six legged friends in the garden, and not on your table

✂️ cut at just the right stage!
-hard ball that you can't squish with your fingers? too soon!
-open bloom or almost open bloom? too late! (go ahead and bring it in but it won't give you more than a day or two)
-you can see color but no petals are open yet, and it's soft like a marshmallow when you gently squish it? perfect!

💧 after your ant bath outside, gently shake off the water and bring them in - give them a fresh angled cut at the bottom (and I do one vertical snip at the bottom for good measure!) and add them to a clean vase with warm water and flower food of your choice!

🌤️ place them in indirect light / the direct sun will accelerate their bloom time

⏳ want to save them for later? strip off the leaves, wrap the stems in damp paper towels and saran wrap and pop them in the fridge! (keep away from ripening fruit which will age them!)
when you take them out, make a fresh cut on the bottom and give them a day to warm and bloom!

Today was unveiling day!
Storing dahlias over the winter is not for the faint of heart - they can't be too hot, they can't freeze, they can't be too wet, they can't dry out and shrivel. You never know what you're going to find!
This year we tried a new, more laidback approach using pine shavings and rubbermaid bins.

Success!! And even baby sprouts popping up already!
