Step 3 making traditional root beer. Filter the cooled medicinal decoction, add maple syrup, sugar, molasses snd a few slices of ginger root. Cover with cheese cloth to begin fermentation. Also add more ginger root, sugar and water to your ginger bug to keep it growing. I’m thinking of a real ginger ale with that next! Stay tuned for the fermentation progress!

Step 2 making traditional root beer. Once your ginger bug is going well and you have at least 1 cup, make a decoction of the herbs. Sarsaparilla, sassafras, birch bark, cinnamon and vanilla. Slow simmer for a half an hour and let it cool to room temp.

Making traditional Root Beer. Step 1: ginger bug. This is ginger root fermenting. Daily mix of grated ginger root and raw sugar. It naturally ferments from the yeasts on the peel of the ginger root. It will give the root beer its natural carbonation. Plus ginger is a great anti inflammatory, settles the stomach, can lower blood pressure and improve lipid profile. Historically our beverages were a tasty way to deliver herbal medicines.

A beautiful start to the day. Presence. My goal for today. We receive gifts every day. They are fleeting and easily missed if you are not present to notice and receive them. A stunning sunrise, a kind word or gesture from someone, a rainbow, a really amazing tasting cup of coffee, a blooming flower, a refreshing swim in the water or a nice hot shower. Presence to offer gifts to others; a hug, a smile, a supportive and kind word, your help if possible. I’m grateful to be here. Big love for this adventure called life.
