Our hops are growing! Stringing and training were completed much earlier this year with some help and organization. Weeds are still our biggest concern, and we work on that daily. The amount of variety of growth is interesting from some almost to the top wire, others just barely climbing up the string, to some already producing sidearms. It is a most interesting crop!

Hops are growing and we are almost done stringing! If you don't know about the process, the strings or coirs (pronounced coy-yours) are tied with an oxtail knot and then dropped down for securing to the ground. We've experimented with a variety of techniques but have found using a W clip is the most effective. After securing the clip to the applicator, placing the string on top, we push it into the ground. Next task is training... more on that later!

More springtime happenings at HillCrest Hops! Canals are full, the meadowlarks have returned, and the killdeer are laying eggs 😊 An interesting fact is that the first shoots that emerge are called bull shoots or hops asparagus. You can even harvest these tender shoots like asparagus and sauté them with oil and garlic. Yummy! But these aren't the ones we'll train as we cut them down so the thicker stronger shoots can grow. However ... that won't happen this week as a snowy hop yard greeted us this morning!

The bees are back in town and baby hops are peeking out! We're already beginning maintenance by cleaning up areas in the hop yard, replacing poles and spraying those dang weeds! But for today we awoke to snow. Springtime in Wyoming!

Presenting: Michigan Copper!
If you're ever wanting to see and smell an amazing hop, this one is at the top of the list! Called a Super Aroma, its flavors include fruit punch, tropical, cherry, pepper and floral. Wowza! And does it ever grow big! Used in IPAs, APAs, wheat beers, Belgians, lagers and stouts, this was our first ever hop to be used in a local brew by Ten Sleep Brewing Company . We love this hop and so will you! It is a speciality hop, and we still have some available to try in your next new creation!

Introducing: Mackinac!
This hop is one of our two specialty hops that is truly amazing! It has aromas of BIG tropical, citrus, melon, papaya and spice. It's wonderful in IPAS, Double IPAs, New England style IPAs, and juice bombs-just to name a few. These are big hops with a huge yield and large amounts on lupulin throughout the cone. Give us a shout if you'd like a sample of this wonderful hop!

Highlight on: Centennial!
We still have some dried whole cones of this commodity hop. We didn't have enough to pelletize as it's a little more challenging to grow. But man oh man is it an interesting hop! Known as the Super Cascade, Centennial has aromas of citrus and pine which are definitely an interesting combination. It's especially good in Pale Ales and IPAs but really a great addition to all ales and wheat beers. They are not a big cone, but they are packed with the golden yellow lupulin. We hope to see a great crop this year!

Spotlight on: Chinook
These are another commodity hops very popular with brewers. Chinook have flavors of pine, spice, and bright grapefruit. Who knew? They are suitable for American IPAs, Pale ales, seasonal ales, barley wines, porters, stouts and lagers. A very versatile hop that lasts a good long time in storage.
Give us a shout if you want to try some!

Featuring: Cascades!
These are a commodity hop that are very popular with brewers for their grapefruit and floral accents. Cascades are often used in IPAs, Porters, American Pale Ales, and even in wheat beers.
We still have some available for purchase grown and pelletized in 2024.
