Threats and fear-based leadership seem to get results. People do what they are told. However, this pattern will need to be repeated over and over and trust is not built. Joy-based leadership says I am glad to be with you, let’s solve this problem together. It takes more effort in the short term but creates trust and lasting results.

When I was diagnosed with cancer, several well-meaning people told me, “Stay strong, you can do this”. By this point in my life, I had already learned the hard way that leaning on my own strength was a sure road to burn-out and anxiety. Asking for God to give me His strength and receiving that gift daily, is an overflowing cup that never runs dry. I know who I am going to trust in.

The Achiever talent is the most frequent talent in the CliftonStrengths Online Talent Assessment. When Achievers read Ephesians 2:10, we tend to focus on the second half of the verse: works, walking in them, getting them done. While that is important, we can’t skip the first half of the verse.

You are His workmanship, crafted lovingly, carefully, and intentionally by your Father. You were created in Christ Jesus, not by random chance. You were created and set apart on purpose, for His purpose.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Humility. I am going to move that to the top of the list of characteristics of an exceptional leader. Above vision, strategy, communication, charisma…Leaders are called to serve and service requires a posture of humility. Let’s put it on.

First response. Frustration, blame, anger, excuses? I want to change my first response to prayer. As a leader who follows Jesus Christ, I want to lift up my team and their burdens to Him. He cares about every detail.

Effective leaders have a different spirit. Think about a great leader in YOUR life. What fire was in their spirit? What fanned their flame? We are all burning for something. Effective leaders have a different spirit; a flame with deep purpose, that cannot be extinguished.

Leading is a journey of learning, growing, and advancing in what matters. BUT boy oh boy it is a ride! The highs of team unity and forward momentum and the lows of deep conflict and mistrust, not to mention how we trip on our blind spots and major mistakes. I believe we can move from frustration and overwhelm to leading alive and free with joyful hope and unbridled possibilities. Leadership is truly a calling and one that we cannot do in our own strength. Let’s learn and grow together!
