Kinne Brook Farm

Kinne Brook Farm Family-owned and in its 2nd generation, Kinne Brook Farm raises certified humane and certified grass-fed and -finished Highland cattle.

We sell beef in bulk packages (25, 50, and 100 pounds) and by the cut, from the barn and at local stores/farm stands. Kinne Brook Farm has been in the Lake family since 1980. In 2010, Eliza Lake and her husband Bart Niswonger bought the farm and now live in the early 19th-century farmhouse with their son Augustus and their daughter Charlotte. The farm is rich in its diversification: we have a grow

ing herd of Highland Cattle which we raise for beef; make our hay on 100+ acres of our and our neighbors' fields; cut our own firewood; and provide sap to our neighbors at Justamere Tree Farm for them to boil into maple syrup. In addition, Bart builds furniture in an old machinery shed and Eliza works at a local community health center. We are proud to be certified as using humane practices for our beef, and certified grass-fed for our beef by A Greener World. We welcome visitors, and are happy to give tours to those who want proof that their food is raised in the most healthy and humane way.

After years of talking about it, we finally decided that in the name of health and safety, both ours and the cattle’s, and because the kids won’t be around forever to help us, we needed a new animal handling process.

This week the vet came to give the bull a once-over, since he’s leaving at the end of the month for new pastures in OK. And we were ready. We ran the herd through the chutes twice before she came, they learned the new drill immediately, and the whole thing took about 30 minutes.

A purchase well worth it!

There’s a lot to learn your first day at any job, even if the job is being a cow.

Three more girls in the last week!

Welcome, Quarkie, daughter of Echo born last Saturday. And then daughters of Leia (Wednesday) and Lucy (today!), who both need Q names (the latter preferably related to Star Wars).

We would like to request from the universe that we get some non-red calves soon - we don’t care about color generally, but it’s hard to tell them all apart. Although Lucy’s girl is a lovely dark brindle, which makes me happy. 😊

Out on grass at last!

Every spring we wait until there is enough grass grown to take the cows out of their winter sacrificial paddock (so called because they are not gentle on the grass in it). Today was the day! They are very happy - the grass is no longer greener on the other side of the fence!

And for those with eagle eyes, can you spot all three babies?

It must be spring - the babies are coming!

And the first one has arrived - welcome Qui-Gon, son of Hope!

He is the latest in the string of Star Wars themed babies from Hope (joining current herd members Leia, Mandalorian/Mandy, and Paploo the Ewok).

We’re going to need a bunch of names that begin with Q this year - happy to hear suggestions!

Being a messy eater has its advantages - a softer and less snowy place to sleep!

In case the waste seems worrisome, we put a deep bed of wood chips down in the feeding area at the beginning of the winter, and feed them in the same spot until spring. Then we scoop up the chips, the hay, and the manure, compost it all down, mix it with wood ash (not from our stove, but tractor trailer loads), and spread it on our fields. A minimum of nutrients is lost!

Talk about your lean beef!

I just cooked a pound of our ground beef into three hamburgers on a very lightly oiled pan, and this is all the fat that was left in the pan. 😮
