It’s been awhile since I posted anything in the garden because I haven’t done anything for about two years. It’s been on autopilot. From the right angle it looks good.

The Texas Deep Freeze of 2021 gave more than it took in the garden. We lost most of our landscaping in the front. In the garden, I lost some of my herbs and winter vegetables. But something special happened with the freeze. The herb and wild flower seeds I have been tossing in the back the past 8 years that never grew, decided that this was their year. So much so that I have been thinning them out for weeks but more are coming faster than I can pull them. The fruit trees are heavy with abundance and need to be thinned as well. I thought my pomegranate was a goner but it too is showing signs of life.

I am more than a little thankful this year for my winter garden. No Coronavirus on my lettuce.

Working in the garden today I found three pepper plants. I don’t know what kind of peppers yet. I love when the garden surprises me.

I got to work in the garden for a little while today. With my knee injury and the four surgeries I had this year I was happy to finally get my hands in the dirt and see what was lurking under all the weeds.

The morning I crashed my bike I had planted some potatoes. Curt started digging them up as needed about a month ago and dug the rest out today. I love digging up potatoes, it feels like Christmas.

I was also pleasantly surprised to find some other things growing from seeds planted the year before.

I found: tomatoes, peppers, onions, fennel, carrots, beans, Swiss chard, corn, and butternut squash. Not bad for zero effort.

We had a great plum harvest this year. A few plum crumbles, a big batch of plum sorbet, and a few quarts packed in the freezer.

I have some rouge sunflowers growing in the garden that can be dug up and I need to prune back some grape vines. If you want some stop by the garden between 6-8 PM tonight

I haven’t been in the garden for the past 4 weeks because of a knee injury but the seed catalogs are pouring in. Looking forward to Spring.

I thought the hard freeze last night was going to kill my squash but it’s still going strong and has a few buds forming.
