An excavator and a back hoe can be seen working on the county road. Fred and Fran watched the ditches get cleaned out. This will help during rains to keep the road in better shape and helps water run off the fields and not drown plants. The county road department and farmers both work on drainage to keep the roads in good shape. Thank you Dennis Martin and Cross County Road Department!

Herbicide spraying continues in the county on soybeans. Fred and Fran stopped to visit with Gary Harrison who was spraying for Pribble Farms. This spray will protect the field from grass and weeds. Killing weeds prevents weeds from taking valuable nutrients and water from the soil that soybeans need. The sprayer has a large clearance so it doesn't damage plants. The large booms allow the sprayer to make less passes on the fields which helps reduce the chance that plants are run over by the tires.

Fred and Fran were excited to visit another library in the county. They helped the Women's Leadership Committee, Cross County Farm Bureau YF&R, and members of Cross County Farm Bureau board bring Youth Ag Day to downtown Wynne. Children and their parents were able to learn about wheat, corn, rice, cotton, soybeans, cattle, milk Bessie the Arkansas Farm Bureau Federation milk cow and visit the petting zoo from Delta Ridge 4-H club.

Before they packed up, Fred and Fran found some books they think everyone should read! Be sure to look at all the pictures to find their recommendations then visit Cross County Library to see if you agree with their choices.

Rick Wimberley took Fred and Fran on a trip to the Rice Research and Extension Center in Stuttgart, AR. Mr. Wimberely was picking up supplies for the Most Crop Per Drop contest. The contest is an annual irrigation yield competition in Arkansas that rewards farmers for achieving maximum crop yields with the highest water use efficiency. Competitors track their water usage using flowmeters and compete in corn, soybean, and rice categories. Prizes ranging from seed to cash are awarded to the winners.

Fred and Fran headed to Parkin and helped plant sunflowers in the Irvin Sisk Jr. Memorial Sunflower Garden. Sunflower seeds were loaded into a seeder on the back of a UTV. They were spread between the planted crops and US Highway 64. Be sure to look on the north side of the road when you drive through the area. You'll be able to watch the flowers grow and eventually, bright yellow sunflowers will add beauty to the roadside.

While visiting a family homestead in the Ozarks, Fred and Fran were excited to meet lots of baby animals and fowl. This farm had lots of babies! These can be used to help other families get started in making their farms more sustainable. They can also be used to grow a flock or herd. Fred and Fran learned several new names for these babies. You might have already known that a baby goat is called a kid, but did you know that a baby turkey is called a poult? And a baby guinea is a keet? Ducklings, goslings, chicks, poults, keets, oh my!
