Seedlings are finally ready to go into the ground, along with some I picked up from a local farmer.

This time we put in tomatos, peppers, more patta pans, a few cucumbers and eggplant.

This year's experiment is focusing on vertical growth.

Still have to lay down mulch and straw, which is going to be more important this year, while our area is under a severe drought.

The state is in a severe drought right now, so the logging company that owns the swamp behind us decided this was the perfect time to go in and clear cut, harvest the swamp.

The seeds banks have been opened, but when the rains start once more, we are going to have to keep our eyes opened for the possibilities of the swamp invading our yard now that there are no more trees to soak up the waters.

When we first moved here, just over 6 years ago, we had to cut up a number of downed trees.

We used those logs to create an edging around the driveway.

As the years have passed, those logs have started rot, and fall apart.

Because of this, we have changed out focus. Slowly, we are removing the decaying logs and replacing them with some beautiful yucca plants that were fighting to survive in the woods.

It is just a start, but I am really liking the look so far and can't wait to see them grow.

First post frost weekend, with great weather. We hit the garden.

Corn, peas, beans, yellow squash, zucchini, green stripe squash, green cabbage, red cabbage, broccoli, acorn squash, lettuce... all the seeds and plants went into the ground.

There is so much more to plant, but we really hit the ground running this weekend.

I am so excited for this season, just beginning.

The red bud trees are dropping their blooms.

The Cherokee plum tree is in bloom.

And, the blueberries are starting to flower.

Spring is here, and I am filled with energy and hopes for the outside work to come!

I prefer to buy my livestock supplies from a small, local feed farm over a chain supply store.

Prices are better, it supports a small business, and the people really get to know you and care.

During the ice and snow storm last month, we unfortunately lost our rooster, Ricky. When the feed store owner heard, he let me know he had a friendly boy, looking for a new home, if I was interested.

So today, I came home with a month worth of feed.... a white leghorn rooster (Now named Paulie) ... and.... 6 pullets. 2 barred rock, 2 golden orpingtons, and 2 red laced wyandottes (all currently being called "please don't be roosters "

Chicken math is so real.

With winter still hanging on like a visitor who has out stayed their welcome, I think about one of my favorites for cold weather. Chili.

Here's a standard recipe from our homestead.

Home made Chili.

1lb Ground Beef (browned)
1 large onion (sautéed till golden brown)
Cans red kidney beans
1 large can of baked beans (we used our own homemade baked beans we canned)
Chili spices of your choice (we used chili peppers, black pepper, garlic, powdered onion) or a package of chili seasoning (pre made)
1 can diced tomatoes (we used our canned tomatoes)
1 can Mushroom slices
Mix all ingredients in a large pan or crock pot and simmer until all blended and thickened.
( you can add fresh garlic, fresh peppers if you wish)

Visitors to the farm on trail cam the last 24 hrs.

With warmer weather, been putting the cameras up again, since homestead mama said she saw a stray cat.... the size of a beagle.

They are small and delicate right now, but excited to see the 1st tiny tomato sprouts coming up!

There are only 7 right now and I planted far more than I can use, but I am also aware that many of them may not make it to transplant size.

This is the 1st year that we have tried such early indoor planted, but you can't succeed, if you don't try.

Still hoping to see growth in the other seeds we planted.

The swamp and the homestead has frozen over. A reliable source measured us at 9 inches. The news says 12 inches.

The electricity is still on, so that's the best thing right now.

Now we hunker down and stay safe, making sure the livestock stays safe and fed.

I may let them out later today for a little while to stretch their wings, but not for long.

What to do when you can't work outside, you have to stay inside, and are trying to stay warm.

Think warm thoughts and plan for warmer days to come.

In that mindset, today I planted 24 pepper plants, and 120 tomato plant, plus 2 pots of strawberries.

Trying a new coconut medium I've heard people raving about and was able to get at a really discounted price.

If this all works, we should have a great start to our summer garden.
