Fresh flowers are available every Wednesday and Saturday during the growing season, May through mid-October.

Ever wonder what happens to the dahlias after frost?

We start by cutting back all the foliage. And I actually cut back the plants last week BEFORE the frost. Not necessary, but definitely easier to work with living tissue than cold mushy stems.

If you have just a few plants, you may want to leave them blooming right until frost takes them. But with 700 dahlias in the field, I plan around the weather and field crew availability.

So that meant we cut them on a dry sunny day last week when I had extra hands on deck.

You can dig the tubers immediately, or leave them in the ground a couple of weeks to let the eyes form up a bit. If the weather is nice, I like to give mine at least a week in the ground. That gives me time to remove all the stakes and psyche myself up for the actual digging!

I have a hangover. 😎

Not the alcohol-induced version, just the flower farming version.

Last Saturday was the first Saturday since April that I didn't have to hop out of bed and set up the flower stand. There was nothing to harvest Friday morning. The field is a mostly blank slate.

And while there's still plenty to do (tubers to dig, bulbs to plant, Christmas magic to create), it doesn't hit quite like flowers in the field to be cut.

Working with such a perishable product puts a certain urgency to everything. And life slows a bit when that ends for a season.

If you see me in the -ber months and I don't know what day it is, just play along. There's always a little adjustment to be had outside the growing season. 😉

Have you made anyone cry this week? 😬

I did. I made an employee cry.

Mindy is one of the hardest workers on the farm.

And when she left after work last Thursday, she knew I was going to clear out the 2 rows at the top of the field for cover crop over the weekend.

But she didn't know that Kelli and I were chopping down all the dahlias on Tuesday.

So when she pulled into the farm yesterday morning and saw the empty rows, she got a lump in her throat. And almost cried.

The end of the season can feel abrupt sometimes, even when you're out there in the weeds every day.

So take up the reminder from Ferris Bueller, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

I've worked alongside this guy in the dahlias for about six weeks now. He set up shop on the Diva plants and routinely wrapped up whatever inadvertently made its way to his web.

I appreciated it most when he caught the occasional grasshopper. Those beady eyed monsters ate more than their fair share of blooms this season.

But yesterday we cut back all the dahlias and re-homed this guy to some neighboring plants.

Here's hoping I don't actually run across hom again anytime soon. ✌️

We are saying goodbye to the 2026 dahlias this week. 😢

A little Sunset u-pick on Monday evening is the send off before we start cutting back the plants on Tuesday.

I know it seems weird to cut back a 4 ft tall dahlia that's still cranking out blooms, but the time has come.

Sometimes we can wait for a freeze to kill off the foliage for us, but when Jack Frost runs late, we take matters into our own hands!

After the cutback, we'll let them rest a bit before we start digging, washing and dividing all the tubers to store for the winter.

It's a labor of love, but these beauties are worth it. ❤️

This is the last Saturday of fresh flowers for 2026 😢

Stop by the flower stand today for daglias and cute pumpkins, and stay tuned for next week's plans. There may be a daglia u-pick one night next week.

Everyone thinks flower farming is a dream job...

Until you're on your knees all morning face down in the dahlias tying flagging tape to label every clump.

Extra points for avoiding the giant orb weaver strung between the Ferncliff Illusion blooms. 🕷🕸 Still waiting for AI to take over on this part!

The end is near!

We finished tagging all the dahlia plants yesterday, and that always feels like a significant accomplishment.

It means they're safely labeled, and if frost doesn't get them first, we'll be cutting them back at the end of next week.

I'm trying to psyche myself up for the change of seasons, for digging and dividing tubers, for planting tulips for next spring.

Believe me, I'm ecstatic to be working in cool temperatures and lower humidity. And the blue sky in October is tough to beat.

But it's always hard to say goodbye to summer and all the blooms. I find little bees parked on the flowers when I walk the field every morning.

They aren't quite ready to let go either. ✌️
