How do you get the most out of your lessons?

As an instructor, I usually try to have an exercise or two that I focus on each week that works for all of my students. For example, everyone may have lateral movement that we focus on or getting a straight, patient halt. That doesn't mean we don't pay attention to the other things that we've been working on but it's a good way to introduce a new concept or working towards perfecting a basic.

I always try to end a lesson reiterating what my student should work on by themselves until the next lesson. I encourage them to take notes once they've finished the ride.

How do you keep progressing and what do you want from your instructor (me or someone else)?

A 10-15 minute hack every ride can improve things quickly.

✴️ Warms you and your horse up before a ride or a good cool down after some harder work.

✴️ Gives you a chance to make sure the horse is in front of your leg and relaxed before starting in the arena.

✴️ Spend some time making sure you're sitting straight and your horse is moving forward straight. This is a big one for me. If you're walking long, straight lines, can you sit evenly in the saddle with your elbows close and your reins even? Does your horse stay straight on the line that you've picked or is it always wanting to be a bit crooked? If so, then come back to your own posture.

✴️ If available, play with varying terrain (we have poles and hills as part of the regular route).

✴️ Allows your horse to get comfortable with being out and about away from the other horses in the barn. My loop goes away and back to the barn. Horses always get more relaxed the more they do it.

✴️ Sometimes, I'll ride on the buckle and sometimes I'll go on a short rein or a combination of both. It depends on the horse and my goal but I like to feel like I could do either at any time.

We put the last siding sheet up on the arena last night. We've had it open all these months while we build the lean-to. You can see the observation window at C and the walk thru into the barn. We have more to do on the barn and big sliding doors to install on the arena before winter. As much as I've appreciated the indoor on these hot days this summer (hello lovely west breeze and shade!), I'm looking forward to being out of the wind and elements this winter.

Who wore it best - the muddy gelding addition. Not pictured are the mares who were not turned out in paddocks that were not part of the most recent excavation project and stayed quite clean.
