Funny Farm Hogs

Funny Farm Hogs Welcome to Funny Farm Hogs! We are a family based livestock operation, run by myself (Cara) and my mom (Dianne).

Family farm that's been raising hogs for over 40 years (consistently, though technically we're 2nd & 3rd generation pig farmers) - Berkshire and Berkshire cross; primarily offering feeder pigs, and occasionally registered breeding stock. We are primarily a farrow to wean operation - though we occasionally keep a few to raise out and sometimes offer half or whole shares on the rail at competitive p

ricing. Our boars are Berkshire, and all of our sows are Berkshire or Berkshire crosses. We can now offer registered stock as well - though there may be a wait for a litter to be born or weaned. Our focus is providing healthy and happy pigs around 9 weeks of age to families that wish to raise their own pork at an affordable price. Unfortunately, since we actively look for stock not close to the "show pig" stature, our pigs are not very competitive in the show ring. Our goal is to maintain that traditional phenotype from before commercial breeds were "modernized" to all look the same, and to provide breeding stock to those that share the same goal. Outside of the pigs, we also have a varied flock of chickens and often have extra eggs of many colors to sell. We also happen to be a couple of those little girls that never grew out of that " horse crazy" phase, and have several equines as well. We've got a couple of barn cats to help keep the mice population down, as most farms do. Our dogs are farm dogs, a mix of herding and protection breeds, so while we welcome visitors, we ALWAYS ask that people let us know when they are coming over. We love to talk pigs, so please don't hesitate to reach out, even if it's just with questions!

....... Apparently one of Watty's kids found the right little crevice to scratch both sides of his butt at the same time.... He's either very smart, or very special....

It's already been a busy day this rainy Saturday!

We picked up a ton of feed, got it emptied off the truck and into barrels; sold some weaner pigs, and then weaned Misfit, Modelo & Watty and kicked them out of the barn.

The girls will get their dose of Farrowsure today or tomorrow, and the babies will get their dose of Dectomax wormer today when we do chores. There is lots of squealing in our immediate future.....

Pretzel and Pop Tart this morning thought they needed some entertainment, so I gave them a smaller branch from the downed tree.

These girls are hopefully ready for their first boyfriends come August or so - they're about 250lbs, and could technically be bred now, but since our boys are upwards of 700lbs, they need to get a bit bigger to be able to hold them.

Unfortunately, a tree that's been a staple in the backyard for years decided to split in half yesterday morning.

While Crossfire and Fox are lame and just ignore tree parts when we put them in with them, Manny has a grand old time taking these apart.

A screaming baby is pretty much the only thing that gets this girl back in the barn.... A week and a half and she gets to go back outside, sans kids.

Regardless of species, siblings, apparently, are always the worst..... These guys were feeling frisky this warm morning, poor mom is already over their premature teenage angst....

These guys have been doing fantastic! They've started wandering outside with mom during chores, and have not figured out how to go back in in an organized manner..... They're lucky they're so cute.

Two of these guys will be sold as replacement boars, and two possibly as replacement gilts. The other 4 are spoken for as feeders.

When Mom has favorites.......

Mammas always get good treats after farrowing - it's a hard job they have, and everyone loves sweets! Whiskey got some cinnamon roll, both this morning, and this afternoon.

Looks like our ending total is 9 total born, 8 born alive. A little smaller of a litter than her last one, but these guys look a bit bigger, too. She was done by 3 this morning, but I was blitzed out on cold pills and didn't have it in me to post earlier.

Whiskey is of course being a super awesome mom - careful, talkative and attentive. We'll process babies later today, but it looks like an even split of boys and girls!
