๐Ÿ“ HOMESTEAD BS PANTRY CHALLENGE: THEY CAN'T ALL BE WINNERS! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Well, folks, we've officially had our first questionable dessert of the October grocery challenge! ๐Ÿคฃ

Ashley decided to get fancy and make a beautiful Swirl Cake with Custard using ingredients we already had in the pantry.

The recipe picture looked AMAZING. Fluffy cake, beautiful swirls, creamy custard... the kind of dessert that makes you want seconds before you've even had firsts.

But this is Homestead BS, and we don't run to the grocery store just because we're missing an ingredient! ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿฅฅ No regular milk? Coconut beverage it is!

๐ŸŒฝ No cornstarch? Tapioca starch to the rescue!

What could possibly go wrong?! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Well... apparently a few things.

The flavor? Actually not bad!

The texture? Let's just say it developed a personality of its own. ๐Ÿคฃ

The appearance? Somewhere between a custard cake and an archaeological discovery.

But here's the good news: It's okay-ish with a hot cup of coffee! โ˜•๐Ÿ˜‚

And that's what this challenge is all about. Using what we have, trying new things, learning what works, and occasionally creating something that looks like it might crawl off the plate.

Would we make it again? Maybe.

Would we make the same substitutions? ABSOLUTELY NOT! ๐Ÿคฃ

No grocery trip required, a lesson learned, and a memory made.

Some recipes become family favorites. Others become family legends.

This one's going in the legend book. ๐Ÿ“

๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ’ฐ Homestead BS $30 October Food Challenge โ€” Day 11 Update!

11 days down, 20 to go! ๐Ÿ˜‚

So far, we've spent a whopping $7 of our $30 grocery budget! That went toward a big jar of popcorn kernels and some canola oil so we can keep the popcorn flowing! ๐Ÿฟ

We've spent most of this past week eating leftovers, cleaning out the fridge, and making sure nothing goes to waste. Not exactly exciting, but that's part of the challenge!

Today, though, we got serious and took the time to inventory all of our pantries.

And HOLY COW... do we have a lot of stuff! ๐Ÿ˜‚

We've been putting food away for years, and it's amazing how much you accumulate when you keep adding to the shelves. We found plenty of forgotten ingredients, random odds and ends, and things we didn't even remember having.

And tonight, Ashley took some of those odds and ends and hooked us up with a fancy dinner! Proof that you don't have to run to the grocery store to put something good on the table.

๐Ÿ’ต Budget: $30

๐Ÿ›’ Spent: $7

๐Ÿ’ฐ Remaining: $23

๐Ÿ“… Days remaining: 20

We're learning that being prepared isn't just about stocking up. It's about knowing what you have, rotating through it, and actually putting it to use!

The real creativity is just getting started! Stay tuned to see what we come up with next.

๐ŸŒถ๏ธ $30-A-Month Grocery Store Challenge: Freezer & Pantry Archaeology ๐Ÿ˜‚
Tonight's dinner started with a little Homestead BS archaeological expedition.
Digging through the back of the freezer, we uncovered a forgotten package of smoked pulled pork. Then we started digging through the pantry and found some cans hiding in the back of the shelves that had apparently been collecting dust for a while.
Add in some dried beans we already had, onions, garlic, spices and a few other pantry staples and...
Smoked Pulled Pork Chili was born. ๐ŸŒถ๏ธ๐Ÿ–
And THIS is exactly why we're doing our $30-a-month-from-the-grocery-store challenge.
It's not just about growing and raising more of our own food. It's also about actually using the food we already have.
How many of us have meat buried at the bottom of the freezer, cans shoved behind newer cans, dried beans we've had forever, or random ingredients we bought for one recipe and never touched again?
Meanwhile, we're standing in the grocery store buying MORE food. ๐Ÿ˜‚
So we're cleaning out the freezer. We're digging into the back of the pantry. We're using what we grow, raise, preserve and already paid for before buying something else.
Tonight an overlooked package of pork, some dusty cans and dried beans became a big Instant Pot full of smoky, hearty chili.
Grocery-store money spent on tonight's main dish: $0.
And that's a pretty darn good meal for something that was basically hiding in our house. ๐Ÿ˜‚
๐ŸŒฑ Grow it. Raise it. Preserve it. Find it. USE IT.
Homestead BS โ€” Real food. Real people. A more self-reliant tomorrow.

๐Ÿ’๐Ÿซ Pantry Challenge Win: Black Forest Bread Pudding!
Those random hamburger and hot dog buns taking up space finally met their purpose. ๐Ÿ˜‚ We turned them into Black Forest Bread Pudding using cherry pie filling, cocoa, chocolate chips, milk, and other staples we already had on hand.
Money spent from our $30 October grocery budget: $0.
Used up odds and ends โœ”๏ธ
Cleared some pantry space โœ”๏ธ
Nothing wasted โœ”๏ธ
Dessert was damn good โœ”๏ธ
This is exactly what the Homestead BS $30 October Food Challenge is aboutโ€”use what you've got, get creative, and waste less.
And yes... we'll definitely be making this one again. ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿซ๐Ÿ“

๐Ÿ“ The Homestead BS $30 October Food Challenge
Here at Homestead BS, we try to stay prepared for whatever life decides to throw at us. Because of that, we've been squirreling away food since before COVIDโ€”canned goods, frozen food, homegrown food, staples, and plenty of those random odds and ends that somehow find their way into the back of the pantry. ๐Ÿ˜‚
Wellโ€ฆ eventually you have to actually eat the stuff you've been storing.
So Ashley and I decided October would be a good time for a little experiment.
Our grocery budget for the entire month of October is $30.
Yep. Thirty bucks.
We all know $30 doesn't go very far at the grocery store these days, so we're going to have to get creative and make use of what we already have stuffed into our cabinets, pantry, freezers, and around the homestead.
Part of the goal is to reorganize and rotate our food stores, use up some of the forgotten odds and ends, cut down on waste, and see just how far being prepared can actually take us.
We're only a few days into October, so things haven't gotten too interesting yet. But as the month stretches on and the easy choices start disappearing, I'm sure we're going to have to come up with some pretty creative meals.
Tonight's experiment already involved turning leftover hamburger and hot dog buns, cherry pie filling, cocoa, and chocolate chips into Black Forest Bread Pudding. So I'd say we're off to a pretty good start. ๐Ÿ˜‚
Follow along! We'll try to post an update every few days showing what we're eating, what we're using up, how much of that $30 we've spent, and whatever ridiculous recipes we come up with along the way.
Let's see if we can make it all 31 days.

How are y'all beating this crazy heat? ๐Ÿฅตโ˜€๏ธ
The animals here at Homestead BS have it figured outโ€”fans, plenty of shade, fresh water, and whatever nature gave them to stay cool.
For us humans, we try to knock out the chores early before the heat really settles in. Once the afternoon rolls around, it's time to slow down and enjoy something a little cooler.
Today, Phoebe and I headed to the lake and broke in my brand-new stand-up paddleboard (SUP)! We set up a little shade shelter, splashed around, and spent the afternoon enjoying the cool water.
Sorry there aren't many pictures... this is the only one we took. We were too busy making memories and, unfortunately, forgot to bring along our personal photographer! ๐Ÿ˜„
So let's hear itโ€”what's your favorite way to stay cool during these hot summer days? ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ–๏ธ๐ŸŒณ

Happy Birthday to the guy who keeps Homestead BS running! ๐ŸŽ‰

Today we're celebrating Charles!

Whether he's fixing something that shouldn't be fixable, hauling what needs hauling, tending to the animals, or coming up with another project to keep us busy, he's a HUGE part of what makes Homestead BS what it is.

We're thankful for his hard work, his willingness to help others, and his ability to turn "that'll never work" into "hold my wrench."

Help us wish Charles a very Happy Birthday! ๐ŸŽ‚๐ŸŽˆ

This beautiful Memorial Day weekend weather was put to good use here at Homestead BS. ๐ŸŒฑ
We got several rows of plants moved out into the garden, started several more trays of seedlings, and our Jerusalem artichokes are doing great in their bucket setup. We even finished installing some new brick-outlined herb gardens around the greenhouse.
Little by little, itโ€™s all starting to come together. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ“๐ŸŒฟ
