6th Meridian Hop Farm

6th Meridian Hop Farm 6th Meridian Hop Farm is a small private family farm near the Lewis and Clark Lake west of Yankton, SD We are a true modern pioneer family.
(16)

In 2014 we uprooted from our comfortable Omaha suburb to a corn field and a trailer. We constructed a barn and fashioned a livings space and moved in over our first winter. To say the least, it was tight, interesting, and sometimes a little cold. We put poles in the ground, aquired some rhizomes and embarked on our dream of coming home to the rural city and a farm. We have 5 main varieties now and plan to keep adding more to fill our homestead with beautiful hops and space to entertain visitors.

A little Yankton hop history...

Tom Stanage found these cardboard flats in his attic. Our guess is that when Prohibition hit the Schwenk Barth Brewing Company, creating hop teas and trying to sell hops as treatments for toothaches and the mumps was part of the business survival plan.

Swinged Cat Aliment & Ale Fest is cancelled due to a wet weekend.

Our farm venue is a small privately funded venture and we cannot justify the risk with this forecast. We are happy that we have been blessed with good weather up to this point.

We'll be issuing refunds for all ticket sales shortly.

We'll have plenty of food and great craft taps next week when The Hangin' Cowboys come to town!

Our Story

In 2014 Michelle and Ryan uprooted their blended family from the comfortable Omaha suburban home to return to the rural Southeast South Dakota and Northeast Nebraska area where they grew up. In the span of 2 weeks they sold their house and moved all of their belongings into storage. They moved into their camper for the winter of 2014 as their barn was built on a bare 80 acre field of corn and soybeans. The winter was cold and to stretch funds as far as they could, they spent any spare time working on the pole barn.

Ryan and Michelle moved their family into the barn in the spring of 2015 and a month later started raising their first trellis. In 2016, it was the first farm in South Dakota to produce industry standard hop pellets packaged in nitrogen flushed mylar. Now in 2018 6th Meridian has over 4000 hills of hops in 5 acres of land and multiple varieties: Chinook, Centennial, Neo1, Crystal, and Dakota Challenger™. New varieties is a focus of development as well with over a dozen varieties in test or planning.

The farm strives to be an independent and self sufficient family farm much like the pioneer heritage of the Great Plains. Built from the efforts of Ryan, Michelle and their family it aims to be sustainable from using organic fertilizer and chemicals whenever possible for maximum soil health to utilizing independent funding to realize a truly financially viable business in a small rural community.
