In 2014 Michelle and Ryan uprooted their blended family from the comfortable Omaha suburban home to return to the rural Southeast South Dakota and Northeast Nebraska area where they grew up. In the span of 2 weeks they sold their house and moved all of their belongings into storage. They moved into their camper for the winter of 2014 as their barn was built on a bare 80 acre field of corn and soybeans. The winter was cold and to stretch funds as far as they could, they spent any spare time working on the pole barn.
Ryan and Michelle moved their family into the barn in the spring of 2015 and a month later started raising their first trellis. In 2016, it was the first farm in South Dakota to produce industry standard hop pellets packaged in nitrogen flushed mylar. Now in 2018 6th Meridian has over 4000 hills of hops in 5 acres of land and multiple varieties: Chinook, Centennial, Neo1, Crystal, and Dakota Challenger™. New varieties is a focus of development as well with over a dozen varieties in test or planning.
The farm strives to be an independent and self sufficient family farm much like the pioneer heritage of the Great Plains. Built from the efforts of Ryan, Michelle and their family it aims to be sustainable from using organic fertilizer and chemicals whenever possible for maximum soil health to utilizing independent funding to realize a truly financially viable business in a small rural community.
