My usual assortment of Heirloom Tomatoes are now ready in spite of our rainy, cloudy recent weather. I’ll only be open on weekends. Other priorities have my attention so reduced hours, no annuals, herbs unfortunately for now.

After a long run of heat and humidity a nice weekend ahead. There are Monarchs and swallowtails everywhere. Butterfly W**d, Swamp Milkweed, Great Lobelia, Cardinal Flower, Echinacea, Hyssop, Rudbeckia, Bluestem, Gayfeather from tiny to tall.

First Monarch here June 30 on of course Swamp Milkweed. Monarda, Spigelia, Coreopsis, Echinacea, a nice collection of native grasses, Panicum, Muhlenbergia, Bluestem and now that it’s July, some lovely June weather. Also some nice peppers and eggplant plants and spelling from memory…….the peppers are Padilla Basjoo, Ancho Ranchero (great for stuffing), Tam Jalapeño (half as hot as Jalapeño), Pepperoncini, difficult to find Shish*to (if you dare) and for the eggplants Rosa Bianca, Shikoku, Listada De Gandia and more. Still some tomatoes as well. Did I forget Helenium, lots of Lobelia and a bunch of great Hyssops.

Hey, I have a series of photos of a nest of House Wrens showing the daily development of the babies from eggs which I thought would never hatch to some pretty confidant looking juveniles. During this time when you or I approached the nest mom would fly off often unnoticed in a tray of Salvia on a busy table of annuals. She didn’t mind while I pulled back the plants to photograph or water or someone picked out a plant. Early on the chicks seemed to expect this human to feed them with open mouths. Now, they sit quietly as I check in on them. It’s a nice feeling to be trusted especially by the wild things. I’ve included some plants for reference but it looks like they’re ready to fly. I hope this is interesting.

Oh wow it’s been a while……The fringe tree is already blooming and beech is in leaf. After some large projects I’m focusing on the nursery. Lots of new plants from False Indigo to Maidenhair Fern. Hollyhock, Red Buckeye, Summersweet, native grasses and more. Usually something interesting to add to the garden. A fresh delivery of Coast of Maine composts and soils and Pro Mix professional potting soils for great results with your planters. We’re open Wednesday to Sunday 10 am to 5 pm. See you soon!

Hey! Two great butterflies came to dinner today. A Spicebush Swallowtail on Hyssop and a Monarch enjoying Swamp Milkweed. They’re around. Sometimes we need to slow down and take notice. By the way, if anyone disagrees with my identification please correct me.

You’ve got to be quick to get a photo of a Silver Spotted Skipper. Common and widespread in the US except for Maine and some of the western states. The larvae will cut and fold a leaf edge for a hiding place. This one was enjoying wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa). Beautiful.

Even bad guys need some love. This is a Differential Grasshopper. While we don’t want to see swarms of them they are impressive creatures. I am reminded of hot summer days catching them (I caught everything including giant Snapping Turtles!) I am also reminded of the evening drives along our Delaware River and needing to use the wipers to clear the bugs off the windshield. Many things common in my youth I no longer see. Box Turtles and Luna Moths were a joy to find but haven’t seen either for years. As a boy I knew where to find frog eggs which I raised from tadpoles to frogs! Have these things been lost?

Some butterflies agreeably pose for the camera. Most leave me frustrated because they move so quickly. This Tiger Swallowtail gives a good look of both sides revealing its beautifully striped body. It’s feeding on Clethera (Summersweet). We have never used an insecticide (except for bacillus reluctantly) in almost 25 years of operation which at first seemed risky but has proved to be a blessing leading to a healthy population of insect life in relative balance. Come see the bugs!

If I wasn’t able to talk you into the tomato ‘Jolene’ (or you were too shy to sing with me) I’m impressed with the great fruit set. It’s also supposed to be disease resistant. Maybe next year! Let me know how YOUR gardens are doing.
