Come by the Yellow Springs Farmers Market today and check out our observational hive!

Grant’s been so excited to have this teaching tool to show honeysbees LITERALLY in action.

We’re here until 11:30 today so come and check it out!!!

I had so much fun at work today. 🌟🐝😄

One of the teachers, Bryan, spotted a swarm just outside our play yard. 🐝 Luckily Grant and Bryan were able to suit up and head out after business hours and move the swarm into a hive.

Swarm season is wild. We’ve had times where we’ve seen a swarm and 10 minutes later it’s gone. We were so lucky this swarm cooperated and waited all day until Grant’s calls ended around 5.

Help us think of a name for this hive!

This mite is the reason we lost so many hives this year. 🕷️

If you take your fist and place it on your body that’s about the size of this mite on a bee’s body, yikes that’s big. ✊🐝🙀

This year we’ve introduced two new VSH queen colony genetics to our apiary. Along with our surviving hive genetics. The new bee genetics, powdered sugar treatment (to knock the mites off the bees) and brood breaks to try and strengthen our hives before heading into winter we hope will let us have a more successful season 🚿+🧬=🍯

Grant’s also on his way to collect a hive from a place 20 minutes away. The hive was living in a tree that fell during this last wind storm. These sort of natural hives are strong and their survival instincts are amazing. 🤞 These bees flourish in our apiary!

This documentary is amazing I really recommending checking it out!

Stupid cute, cutie goats. Last one for the night I promise.💕💕💕

They’re here!!! Hit me up if you’d like to come visit. These boys are skiddish and need lots of human TLC.

People be like: “what do you feed your chickens?” And I’m like “whatever’s out there.” 😂🪲🐛🕷️

They eat organic feed and honestly they really help keep our tick population down which is why they’re free ranging 99% of the time. They also get food scraps from our household and our farm stay bnb. They’re Jill’s-of-all-trade food machines.

Thank you chickens for closing so many loops and providing us with eggs! ♻️🥚💪

Quick farm update: our bees had a devastating winter only 2 colonies survived out of 11. 🐝🐝🐝

We knew going treatment free would be hard, and this is a HUGE setback for our aviary.

Today Grant drove to Mount Vernon Ohio to pick up two packages of bees with genetics that show they’re able to clean varroa mites off them aka VSH bees (varroa sensitive hygiene).

We’re hoping our surviving colonies plus these new bees will lead to better survival numbers for us next year.

Also, shout out to bee suits and our little blue car! Grant had to drive home suited up to not get stung. Our little blue car helps us do so much farm work, next weekend we ride at dawn (to pick up baby goats).😂

Today I made a video for you showing the insane low input success I’ve had of using the winter sowing method. Years past I would plant hundreds of cells of flower and veggies, repot them up, put fans on them to strengthen the stem, and all under grow lights, and honestly I’m leaving out million different insane input methods.

This is a perfect low input way to grow thousands of super hardy seedlings. For me this year I’m focusing on A LOT of Ohio native seeds I bought through OPN seeds (***a lot of those wildflower mixes you see in the seed aisle, are invasive and non native seeds, just by searching for the first few seeds on the mix you’ll be able to tell). Native plants are so important for supporting native food webs.

With that I encourage you to search up the FB group winter sowers and read what the Admin have put together on how to be successful with this method.

Let me know if you’ve winter sown in containers what what your successes are! Happy Spring and happy growing to all 🐣💖🌷

Happy Easter🐇🐣🌷

Some really exciting things are happening here at the farmette!!!

Violet and I will pick up these two cute additions to our Dwarf Nigerian Goat ”herd” in three weekends!

As always we love to have our animals well socialized to humans so we’d love to have you stop by for a baby goat meet and greet.

The beautiful silver boy will be our sire, so we hope to have adorable goat kids at the farm in the future.
