Funderburg Farm

Funderburg Farm Full Care boarding facility located near Glen Helen. We have numerous, beautiful trails surrounding our 100 acre family owned farm.

Full Care boarding facility with different turnout/stall options depending on availability. Outside board also available, with large mixed herd. Outside boarders do have access to shelters to get out of bad weather. We have a CoverAll indoor arena, 2 outdoor arenas, a 55' round pen, and obstacle field for riding, along with many well kept trails along the Little Miami River. Our farm is family own

ed and everyone lives on site. We also offer lessons and training by Laura Funderburg, Natural Horsemanship enthusiast and L4 Parelli student. Laura can help with colt starting to dressage to Novice Eventing, or just getting confident and safe with horses. Our farm is our favorite place in the world, and we love sharing it with others who feel the same.

checking in!

The hot weather a couple of days ago provided us some good opportunities to try out taking showers, conditioning fly spraying, and enjoying a fan. She took to all of it really well. I am really thrilled with all of her "husbandry behaviors" and the positive patterns we have built over the last few weeks. If I can make it a game or a puzzle for Mikki to solve and be a part of, she is all in! Feet handling, looking in her mouth and touching her lips, hosing, spraying, grooming and tacking....shes doing it all really willingly and it sets the stage so well for her willingness under saddle too. I am trying to get a video for everyone to see her self halter and bridle...she loves it!

We had ride #5 today and finding more straightness and balance and mobility through her body. I will be pulling out some of my go to exercises from Jec Ballou's book over the next few rides to help her even more. What we do to prepare and strengthen a horse's body for good riding is so important... especially on a young gaited noodle!
(Hint: lots of different ground pole and raised pole patterns and questions!....and getting outside on uneven ground and hills!)

The long pole straddle...
Great for proprioception, stabilizing, balance, and of course, clarity with foot control. I have a few favorite exercises with ground poles, and this is one of them!

Part of my job is getting Mikki ready for a rider, and that means physically as much as mentally. Building strength in balance and bringing awareness to different body parts helps with that. Picking her feet up over poles both forward and backwards helps her engage her core and strengthen the muscles around her stifles. Being "square" or balanced over her four legs and able to move in any direction and step under herself with either hind leg makes for a horse that is handy and fun to ride, but also stays sound and moves well.
I am almost certain that Mikki is going to be gaited under saddle and in my experience strengthening that hind end and getting her to use her body well is going serve her very well in finding her gait and moving correctly. Working towards collection isn't fancy, it's important in developing a healthy moving horse.

Also, check out that snaffle! First wears with bridle were easy easy, and the ba****ck pad too. Continuing our pre flight checks, but this girl will be a riding horse soon!

I'm feeling super proud of this eve....
Feet handling have been my first priority and I had a feeling that in working through her issues with that...we would work through layers of other things. In playing with her lifting her feet I have discovered things about her balance... which legs she balances better on and where and how she likes to stand. A lot of times when horses struggle to pick up or hold up a foot its more to do with the balance required than the foot you are trying to hold up.
She is starting to relax her feet into my hand and allow me to lower them instead of holding them up against her belly in a tense and anxious way.. 🦩...
And after getting these things with the feet up, the real win is that she's standing more often with all 4 feet on the ground when I want too. She's more grounded and balanced over all of her legs. She has learned a lot of little things in the last week, but most of it adds up to learning how to learn, and getting her brain re wired to be a puzzle solver and a partner πŸ’•

What a beautiful girl in a beautiful new leather halter!🀩
It has been like Christmas time around here with our generous friends and sponsors and sending fun and necessary items for this girl and Tw***ie! Fly spray, shampoos, halter and lead, snacks, spray conditioner and supplements.... we are so grateful!πŸ₯°

Mikki has been working really hard at keeping her feet down when I want (🦩) and then up when I want! She is doing great and today I was able to handle all of her feet at liberty. She also did her best at standing and being patient with her feet on the ground too. This cue discrimination and having to think about where I want her feet is so good for her big smart brain! I am loving a lot of things about this mare.
She is doing well settling into the herd and I think she is pretty happy student here.
Tackling the foot handling was our first big goal... with a trim coming up soon we will be able to test our skills...and then move onto some other big goals!πŸ’•

Learning to be a little inconvenienced...

I am a huge fan of horses learning to stand tied well. Its not only a safety and necessary task, but also good for moments to process and relax...and to self regulate.

I am not a fan of overfacing and overasking horses to stand tied for hours or hard tying before they are ready... but there are good ways to build duration standing tied letting the horses solve the puzzle of finding comfort and peace while tied. I look for them to find stillness, to c**k a leg, to take a nap.

Sometimes horses have to learn that it's OK to be inconvenienced... to have to do some things they don't really want to do. Its really interesting to watch different horses sort that out and work through it. Some are more dramatic than others, and some relax into it quickly.

Both girls are doing great, but I am not authorized to report on Tw***ie πŸ˜„

I like Mikki more every day, and happy to report that standing tied is just another thing that's not a big deal 😎

Mikki made a wishlist! We would be grateful for any of these items for this summer, or a donation towards feed and loose mineral and all the other things that go into horse care! Every little bit helps!

I am so grateful for Kent's Feed Barn who is sponsoring us again this year with a discounted feed rate for both Mikki and Tw***ie. πŸ’• and Shawn Ratliff who is going to help us out with trims again this year. Generosity from these guys makes it possible to keep doing this awesome thing every summer ❀️

Getting acquainted and learning new skills....

Mikki is doing so well in our sessions and I'm thrilled with where we are starting off. She is such a thinker and a confident girl. We are working through some sticky and pushy spots with moving her front end and learning to soften a bit with the feel on the halter. Today she was nicely lifting and rolling her shoulders into some lovely backing circles and right turns.
I haven't found any obstacles yet that she didn't tromp right over or onto, and I love that she seeks and likes people.
In a different session today I also tied her for a length of time, and then she and Tw***ie went into the herd for the first time. A big day!

Anyone wanting to sponsor and help with Mikki's journey and care for the summer would be greatly appreciated. The usual costs that come with a horse and feeding them all summer add up. We ❀️ our sponsors and they help get this girl to the ATFO where she will hopefully find a partner all her own!
