6 Ways to Support a Grieving Person 💜 by Connie Ruano, HCC's Parent Advocate
Many of us want to help someone who’s grieving… but don’t always know how. If you’ve ever felt awkward or unsure—you're not alone. Showing up matters more than saying the “perfect” thing.
✨Here are 6 simple ways to support someone through grief:
1. Send something thoughtful A small gesture can mean so much. Flowers, a handwritten note, a meal, or even a gift card—it's the reminder that they’re not alone that counts.
2. Offer practical help Grief can make everyday tasks feel overwhelming. Offer to help with meals, errands, childcare, or household chores. Even small acts make a big difference.
3. Truly be there Instead of “Let me know if you need anything,” try checking in regularly or stopping by. A simple “I’m thinking of you” or a hug can mean everything.
4. Help them take a break Grief is heavy. Invite them for a walk, a meal, or a movie—something that brings a moment of relief or normalcy.
5. Sit with them in the hard moments You don’t have to fix anything. Just listen. Let them cry, share memories, or sit in silence. Your presence is powerful.
6. Don’t forget them later Grief doesn’t have a timeline. Check in on birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries. Keep their loved one’s memory alive by mentioning their name and sharing memories.
Remember: There is no “perfect” way to support someone. It’s the small, consistent acts of care that matter most.
