Modern Living Diet

Modern Living Diet Join me on my journey to discovering optimum health and nutrition, in a modern society! Can we really go back to basics? What is a modern living diet?

A common approach seems to be 'go back to basics' which is ideal, but can you really resist the temptations surrounding us. I have been exploring the benefits of eating a raw diet. If you have read up on this, you will know that the principles of a raw diet are to eat a vegan diet, where the food is never heated above 40 *c. This is to ensure you do not kill the nutrients contained in the food, an

d therefore eating is about optimum health, rather than about satisfying a hunger strike. However, when you have eaten a hot meal almost every day your whole life, it's a very hard habit to break. But likewise when you have eaten a cold meal almost everyday for lunch your whole life, it's easy to see how some raw recipies can be introduced to your diet, to increase your exposure to natural vitamins and minerals. If you are on this page, I can only assume that improving your health through diet is something that interests you. There are so many different approaches to this, eating raw is only one of them, but the holistic approach as a whole is very interesting, and so far what I have read up on, makes perfect sense. The problem with seeking out information on healthy eating, is the amount of conflicting information. This makes it very hard to form an opinion, and therefore choose a path to self discovery. You will always come across extremists in the food community, in fact you probably work with someone who believes that being healthy is eating very minimally. These people are probably painfully thin and frail, with bad nails and unhealthy skin. And despite you being aware of their poor health, their choices probably influence you. Have you ever found yourself thinking 'if i just had an ounce of their determination I could look and feel much better'. We have all been there and then you have the other end of the spectrum, the hardcore health nuts, that think living 100% raw, for example, is the ONLY way to reclaim your health, and it's how it SHOULD be, but I find that equally as naive. The truth about modern living is that we do live in a modern world. We have desires, influences, cravings, etc, that make sticking to any regime impossible. And I say impossible with emphasis. No one, upon no one, actually lives by their preachings 100% because that would make them super human. You can't ignore your instincts and feelings, and to find a way of introducing healthy living into your life without hurting your well being is what I aim to achieve. I'm trying to learn and adapt and incorporate as much as I can, but like most out there I wish there was a hard fast rule, or structure or print out step by step guide to get there, but it just doesn't exist. You have to find your own healthy parameters and look after your mental health as much as your physical health. That means making exceptions and accepting imperfection. A good example of this is a raw food chef who gained weight whilst eating raw. Basically it was down to eating too much fruit, something her body just couldn't tolerate. When you learn how to listen to your body, that's when you have found balance, and hopefully a successful modern living diet!

Hi everyone,

I still get regular likes on this page, considering I hardly update it anymore, it's great to know the content is still appreciated. I wish I had the time to dedicate to it, but as I don't, I would like to invite guest posts by anyone who has something informative to say about food!

An article could be a recipe, a food fact, a blurb about something interesting, or well thought out peice on the choices we are faced with today.

If you have something you think would be suitable, send it over for consideration and I will post it for you!

Happy healthy eating!

Laura

So I have been cooking up a storm today. Having a little one around forces you to get things done and out the way as soon as the opportunity strikes. For me that is in the morning when madam is pretty chill. My new best friend is the slow cooker. I love throwing together a stew and letting the wonderful machine work it's magic. Dates From experience, dates are a love it or hate it kinda fruit. I have to say, as dried fruit goes, they were never my favourite until I started looking at raw food, where dates are often prevelant as a substitute to sugar. It was then I discovered the Majool mmmm. A plump large moist piece of heaven! Around the same time I started frequenting Dubai, the holy grail of dates, and could find them in abundance. So I came across this post on Facebook, and I was in total awe. I got the impression this guy woke up one day and just decided to build a veg plot. His commitment and drive not only produced a wonderful garden, but a healthy yield of organic vegetables that he could share with his neighbours. Now this is where it gets crazy.... Food boss!

Now I could write a huge post about eating habits during pregnancy, but given that some of my readers are men and some are women who don't care to read about that stuff, so instead I thought I would jump straight to the heart of the issue.

What happens when you are no longer your food boss? It happens to us all, we see something or feel like something we just HAVE to have.

In previous posts I have talked about cravings and how substituting for something healthy doesn't really work. In theory, that healthy option should have the same affect on the body in terms of sustenance and energy, but it rarely hits the spot.

So what can I do?? I hear you asking in frustration....

You have to re-programme your thinking, by accepting that you can't have something, nothing will compare, and get over it. It is your CHOICE to be healthy, you are the boss, not the food.

Healthy eating requires a level of determination stronger than going to the gym, or doing your homework or doing chores, because the 'distractions' are everywhere. Coffee culture has turned into, coffee and cake time, supermarkets display unhealthy options prominently with flashing lights and neon arrows, and people, mostly family and friends, will be the first to encourage you to have a treat. It's not that they don't love you, they just want permission to indulge themselves.

It takes a strong mind to make the right choices, but if you surround yourself by blogs, articles, recipes, like minded people, you can slowly start to build up your stamina and turn healthy eating into a normal way of life.

For me this time, I hope there is no looking back. I fell off the wagon, hard! And post pregnancy, it's not so easy to just jump back on the treadmill like before. So I'm doing what I know best. I'm fixing my mind, then taking baby steps into the unknown.

I saw a disturbing article this week about growing your own produce that I can't wait to share with you!

Until then... Happy healthy eating!
