Κοίμησις της Υπεραγίας Θεοτόκου
Dormition of the Theotokos
Orthros 830 AM
Liturgy 945 AM
The Dormition of the Theotokos means the "falling asleep" of the Mother of God. It is a major feast day celebrated on August 15 by Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic Churches. It marks the peaceful end of the Virgin Mary’s earthly life and her bodily transfer into heaven, which Western churches call the Assumption.
August 15th is a huge feast day and work holiday in Greece. Panigiria (festivals with food & music) are held throughout many villages and cities to honor the Theotokos. For many Greeks, the Panagia is more than a religious figure – she is seen as a protector, a motherly figure who watches over people and communities.
Χρόνια πολλά (many years) to all and especially those that celebrate their name day today….Maria, Mario, Panagiotis,Panagiota, Despina, Crystalia & Soumela!
