Wheat Harvest has began…. Produce Season is approaching.

05/26/2026

This Memorial Day, we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice made the freedoms we enjoy today possible. From all of us at Yuma Ag Water, thank you to those who served and to the families who carry their legacy forward. 🇺🇸 💧

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Vicki Scott, whose leadership and dedication left a lasting impact on the Yuma Safe Produce Council and Arizona agriculture.

Vicki was more than our President. She was a mentor, advocate, and trusted leader who believed deeply in food safety, education, and supporting others in this industry. Her guidance helped shape professionals across agriculture, and her commitment to excellence will not be forgotten.

More than anything, Vicki built community. She led with strength, generosity, and a genuine desire to see others succeed.

Our hearts are with Vicki’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside her. Her legacy will continue in the work we do every day.

Not every crop grown in Yuma ends up on a dinner plate. 🌱

Yuma is also a major producer of vegetable, grass, and specialty seed crops, helping supply farmers across the country and around the world with the seeds that grow future harvests. More than 175 different crops and seeds are produced in the Yuma area thanks to our unique desert climate, historic Colorado River water deliveries, and ideal winter growing conditions.

From lettuce and broccoli seed to Bermuda grass and specialty seed varieties, these crops are another example of how Yuma agriculture turns water into one of the most efficient and productive food systems in the nation. 💧

The Colorado River is a life blood for the people.

The Colorado River is a life blood for the people.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has taken emergency action on the Colorado River system, approving releases of up to 1 million acre-feet from Flaming Gorge Reservoir through 2027 while reducing downstream releases from Lake Powell.

The goal: stabilize reservoir levels, protect hydropower, and strengthen water reliability for millions who depend on the river. Smart management and proactive planning matter now more than ever. 💧

Most people don’t realize the Colorado River is managed under what’s called the “Law of the River”, going all the way back to 1922 Compact. And Yuma has some of the oldest water rights on the river because of that history. 💧
• Yuma Valley Water Rights are tied to the Ground… Kinda like Mineral Rights.

The Law of the River was written starting in 1922.

Yuma’s water rights date back to that era, making them some of the most senior and secure on the Colorado River.

Priority matters. And so does stewardship. 💧

Water Usage Efficiency.

What Does an Acre of Water Look Like? 💧

Next time you’re trying to picture an acre of water, imagine a football field. A full American football field, including the end zones, is about 1.32 acres in size. That means one acre is just a bit smaller than the whole field, roughly 76% of it.

So when we talk about an acre-foot of water (the amount needed to cover one acre of land one foot deep), think of water covering almost the entire area of a football field 1 foot deep. That’s a lot of water, and a great way to picture the scale of water we manage here in Yuma. (📸: Bureau of Reclamation)
