Ruby Magdalena Vineyards

Ruby Magdalena Vineyards We are an intimate Vineyard, Winery, & Tasting Room. Featuring Spanish grape varieties in the Rattlesnake Hills AVA, Yakima Valley, Washington State ph.

Ruby Magdalena Vineyards is a tiny vineyard and winery owned and operated by Marty and Ryan Johnson. It is located in the Rattlesnake Hills AVA in Washington State. We are located about four miles north of the town of Zillah at 855 Gilbert Road. We carefully craft our wines using only grapes from our 1¼ acre vineyard. Our annual output is limited to less than 350 cases. Small lot production allows

us to pay close attention to every detail of craftsmanship. We raise all of our own grapes, produce, bottle, and distribute our wines ourselves. Because our desire is to create wines from only estate grapes, we’ve limited production to four wines
We are available for vineyard tours, (individuals or small groups welcome) by appointment only. Please feel free to call or message us to schedule a visit. (509) 930-2111

Irrigation water is back on!
After eleven days without irrigation, everyone has had a good drink and the vineyard and roses are looking great! The roses got hit pretty hard and there was considerable heat damage (especially to the delicate white roses), but that is their job. As an indicator species, they show us what is happening in the vineyard and they let us know before the less sensitive grapevines are affected. Fruit set is looking good and the whole place is set for an amazing season. Come out and take a walk up to the vineyard, admire the roses and enjoy a bit of wine. Weather is looking favorable with daytime high temps should be a moderate and sunny 68°F - 75°F.
We're open Thursday through Monday, noon to five.

It's always something...
We finally got our irrigation turned back on after a ten day shutdown. And on point, our 2" gate valve took a nose dive! Easy fix, the gate (putty colored disk looking thingy) had somehow worked itself loose from the screw (screw looking thingy) and we were unable to open the valve normally. So Marty opened it HIS way. A quick (temporary) repair until we can get new packing and a new gasket during the off-season. Also, the vacuum filter housing broke (yeah, Marty busted it) after twenty years of being left out in the elements... Another pretty simple repair. (Disassembly of the old unit was a bit of an adventure...) And we're good to go for another week, until something else ceases to work as it should... If farming was easy, everyone would want to do it!
Stop by our Wine Tasting Pub, the Cork & Pullet and let Marty tell you all about his latest adventures while you sample our wines. We're open Thursday through Monday from Noon until 5:00 pm. (Pacific Time!)

In the process of tying out and trimming up the babies. Our three year old Mazuelo vines are at that stage requiring constant attention. We've got to get out and continue to train the shape of the vine to make the growth most efficient for quality fruit production. This tape gun really helps speed up the process!

"For the 99 percent of the time we've been on Earth, we were hunter and gatherers, our lives dependent on knowing the fine, small details of our world. Deep inside, we still have a longing to be reconnected with the nature that shaped our imagination, our language, our song and dance, our sense of the divine."

We are just entering bloom!
Unfortunately, our irrigation has been shut down for ten days because of drought conditions (and exacerbated somewhat by inefficient use of water...) We've received a boon with a nice little rain shower overnight Monday into Tuesday morning, with another chance of showers tomorrow, but high temperatures are predicted to hit the low 90°s (F). The heat will accelerate blossom opening and the high winds predicted will adversely affect fruit set. We're hoping for the best and sympathize with all of the agricultural growers here in the Yakima Valley. Despite the critical lack of water, it is a beautiful Spring with moderate temperatures for the most part and a nice slow start to the growing season. Come out and see where the grapes are grown for world class wines here in the Rattlesnake Hills!
Our "wine pub" the Cork & Pullet is open from Thursday through Monday from Noon until 5:00pm (Pacific time). We'd love to show you around and share some wine!

Memorial Day weekend is over and the Summer season is heading our way. We hope that you all had a very enjoyable and peaceful holiday. Ryan and I managed to fit in a bit of "camping out" and shared a bit of time with friends as well. We love our cute new Tropics tent from Fire-Maple and the opportunity to camp out in our backyard, amid our grapevines was priceless. According to our Merlin app from Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, we awoke to the songs of: Black Billed Magpie, American Robin, House Finch, Killdeer, Common Raven, Northern Flicker, Mourning Dove, European Starling and Canada Geese, all in the span of ten minutes! It's so amazing to know we've rebuilt so much of the natural diversity here at Ruby Magdalena Vineyards. If you'd like to come visit, taste some wine, and learn about our regenerative projects, give us a call (509) 930-6799 or schedule a tour on our website!

"While we can never fully repay the debt owed to those who lost their lives defending our nation, we must do everything we can to uphold our commitment to those who've worn the uniform of this great nation and to their families who have made significant sacrifices on our behalf." ~ Senator Ladda Tammy Duckworth, Illinois - American Politician and Army National Guard Veteran

Wishing everyone a peaceful and contemplative Memorial Day. Thank you to all who have served and especially those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms and their families. (And to José Vigil, Marty's uncle who was killed by a lightning strike while addressing troops in 1959, days after Marty was born.)

Another amazing interview! It was so much fun to sit and chat with Marji Morgan, a former Professor of History at Central Washington University, Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities and creator of Lines on Wines, a podcast show that grew from a column written for the local newspaper in Ellensburg. Dr. Morgan moved to Washington in the same year that we did, back in 2005, and our life trajectories have some eerie parallels. Since January 2015, Dr. Morgan has been telling the backstories of Washington wines and winemakers through her podcast. There have been many well-known and well-respected folks to share the microphone with this champion of Washington wine for more than ten years! We're so proud to have had the opportunity to share our story with her extensive audience. If you're interested in the true stories from some of the greats of Washington wine, check out her podcast, Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m. PST on Ellensburg Community Radio eburgradio.org, (also streaming on Spotify) and always available on her website www.linesonwines.com
