It is a distressing time. Livestock farmers need to do alot better job of balancing animal numbers with actual resources available and prepare for drought, like hurricanes. The VI Department of Agriculture needs to lead in providing seamless direct assistance: trained staff, working equipment, vendors in place, accurate farm information, enforcement of VI laws and regulations.

As drought conditions take a growing toll on crops, livestock and farmers’ bottom lines, a federal disaster declaration is opening the door to new assistance across the Virgin Islands. But farmers and food-system advocates say the crisis also exposes a larger challenge: how to build the infrastructure, funding and planning needed to keep local agriculture alive before the next drought arrives.

The Girls are doing their best during this abysmal heat and dry weather. And that means Fiddlewood Farm will have our usual delicious locally made g*at cheese Saturday at Southgate Corner Farmers' Market. All the flavors will be there: Cranberry, French Herb, Black Pepper, Garlic Chive and Perfectly Plain. 9 am to 11 am.

Staying cool and eating well are top priorities during this hot, dry weather. And the Girls seem to have found the balance! Fiddlewood Farm Delicious G*at Cheese will be available Saturday from nine to eleven at Southgate Corner Farmers' Market. We will have all the flavors: Cranberry, French Herb, Black Pepper, Garlic Chive and Perfectly Plain. Spice up a recipe or an afternoon snack with locally made chevre.
