Congratulations to Bollywood on being approved with a very respectable score.

We had a good experience overall, especially considering the great value for money. The curries and breads were solid, with a nice spice level that added to the enjoyment. However, it was disappointing that no chutneys were provided with the poppadom’s, as they would have enhanced the meal.

The restaurant feels more like a takeaway than a sit-down dining spot, which affects the atmosphere, but the service was friendly and efficient. While no particular dish stood out, everything was of decent quality, making it a good choice for an affordable meal. The sauces for the poppadom’s could have been better, but given the price, the food exceeded expectations. Would love to return and try the tikka next time!

📢 quotes from the reviews:
- Great flavours and spice
- Great Curries and breads, shame there was no chutneys for the poppadom’s
- The atmosphere of the bar and restaurant was average to good.

✅ things we loved:
- Good spice level
- Great Value
- Good standard of curries
- Great Price

⚠ things to improve:
- More pickles/chutneys for the poppadom’s
- More takeaway than restaurant

Congratulations to little India on being approved!

Little India offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere with attentive staff who clearly take pride in their service. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with hospitality, and the ambiance—enhanced by traditional music and tasteful décor—set the stage for a pleasant meal.

The food itself was largely excellent. The poppadom’s were crispy and well-spiced, and the starters were particularly impressive, with the naan taco standing out as a highlight. The different tikkas were moist, flavourful, and thankfully boneless, making for an enjoyable start to the meal. However, starters arriving at different times meant that some dishes, were colder than expected, which was a little disappointing.

The main curries were served with care, presented beautifully in small pans with a yogurt or cream swirl. The tikka masala had a unique twist compared to what most people are used to, but the spice level was just right—giving a tingle without overwhelming the flavours. The korma was also flavourful, and the potato dish was cooked to perfection. While the cumin rice was good, a touch of crispy onions could have elevated it further. Unfortunately, the naan bread was a bit tough and felt more like chapatis, which was a minor letdown.

Service was friendly, and the staff did their best to accommodate our large group. There were some delays in drinks and food service, possibly due to being slightly understaffed for the size of our party, but their professionalism and attentiveness made up for it. The drinks were served chilled, which was appreciated.

One of the biggest positives was the restaurant’s effort to bring creativity to the menu with fusion elements. While we appreciate the innovation, some members believe that focusing on perfecting traditional dishes is more important. Additionally, when we requested a dish to be as spicy as possible, we were met with some hesitation. While the final dish was flavourful, it didn’t quite reach the level of heat we were hoping for.

The venue itself is cozy, though it feels more like a café than a restaurant. That said, the outdoor seating option was a great plus. Pricing is on the higher side, but given the quality of food, it still offers decent value.

Overall, despite a few minor shortcomings, Little India provided a great dining experience with excellent flavours, a welcoming atmosphere, and a passionate team.

Review: JALSA - indian restaurant
Status: Not Approved
Overall Score: 6.33

⚠ Overall Impression:
Jalsa presents itself as a stylish and upmarket Indian dining experience, but ultimately fails to deliver a consistently satisfying visit. The ambience is visually appealing but lacks warmth or vibrancy, with many comparing it to an airport lounge or food court. The biggest let downs across the board were slow, disorganised service and inconsistent food quality.

🍽 Service:
Service was a recurring issue — slow, disjointed, and at times chaotic. Initial drinks and poppadoms took far too long (up to 40–60 minutes in some cases), with poor communication and little apology. Beer service started slowly but improved. Some positives included food arriving all at once and attentive staff once things got going.

🥘 Food:
A real mixed bag.
- Starters were generally well received — samosas and tikka stood out.
- Curries ranged from excellent (notably the biryani, tikka masala, and chili-laced dishes) to disappointing (overly sweet prawn curry, bland korma, under-seasoned or clumsily spiced dishes like the saag paneer).
- Biryani was frequently highlighted as a standout — considered a strong measure of chef skill.
- Popadoms and chutneys disappointed repeatedly — long delays, wrong types, and missing condiments.
- Drinks: Several complaints about quality and timing (notably soda lime and slow beer service).

🗣 Atmosphere:
Clean and stylish interior but often described as sterile or lacking soul. Acoustics were poor, and poor table placement (near entrance) disrupted the dining experience.

📢 Verdict:
Jalsa promises more than it delivers. A few flashes of brilliance in the kitchen (especially biryani and tikka dishes) are overshadowed by poor service, and a sterile atmosphere. Mixed reactions across the board. Many wouldn't return — not because the restaurant has no potential, but because it consistently missed the mark on the night.

Review: Kolkatta Indian Restaurant
Status: Not Approved!
Overall score: 5.98

Our experience at this restaurant was underwhelming, with inconsistent service and food that lacked depth and authenticity.

When we arrived, we were seated promptly, and the manager took our drinks order. However, the beers were served warm, and a regular Coke was missing. After requesting it twice, it finally arrived—but was also warm. This was not a great start and suggested a lack of attention to detail.

The poppadom’s were served quickly but lacked crispiness, with some being oily. Only one type of pickle or sauce was provided, which felt limited. The starters, unfortunately, did not improve the experience. The paneer was extremely dry, offering little flavour beyond a smoky aftertaste. The kebabs were also dry and barely warm, lacking seasoning. Additionally, a plate of raw onions and carrots was served alongside them, which seemed unnecessary and went untouched.

After a long wait, the mains arrived and initially looked promising. However, the chicken tikka masala lacked marinade and tasted more like a generic curry. The madras was disappointing—it seemed like standard curry with raw green chilies added for heat, rather than a well-balanced dish. The vindaloo lacked the expected depth, spice, and colour, making it unrecognizable. The saag curry had a decent flavour, but overall, the curries tasted quite similar, making it difficult to distinguish between them.

On a positive note, the breads were well-made and a highlight of the meal. The menu itself offers a wide variety of options, which is great, but the ex*****on of the dishes could be significantly improved. While the service was responsive when we asked for something, overall, it was slow, and there were long delays between courses.

Ultimately, this felt more like a ghost kitchen with a few tables rather than a fully realized restaurant experience. The food was largely average, with the starters being particularly disappointing. The service, while not bad, lacked efficiency and attentiveness. With more attention to seasoning, marinade, and overall preparation, this restaurant could offer a much better experience.

📢 quotes from the reviews:
- Vindaloo lacked spice
- Curries lacked flavour
- Vindaloo unrecognisable

✅ things we loved:
- Cheap

- Breads

- More pickles/chutneys for the poppadom’s
- Kebabs were cold
- Speed of service
- Cold beers

Review: India Special Restaurant
Status: Not Approved!
Overall score: 4.38

Nestled down a quiet road, the shining light of Indian Special Restaurant drew us in. It was 7:30 PM on a Friday night, and while a few tables were occupied, the atmosphere was relatively calm. We were shown to our room, where we would be settled for the night ahead. Drinks orders were taken promptly, but despite multiple reminders from a member of our party, they took far too long to arrive—an issue that persisted throughout the evening.

When it came to food, there was again a fair wait before the starters arrived. Visually, they looked appealing. The chilli chicken was succulent and full of flavour, but the samosas drew criticism for lacking taste. The biggest groan of the night came when they were served with tomato ketchup.

The mains were presented well, but some members noted that many of the curries tasted quite similar. The breads also sparked discussion—particularly the keema naan, which oddly had the meat placed on top rather than stuffed inside. The garlic naan, meanwhile, was overwhelmingly garlicky for some.

📢 quotes from the reviews:
- Decent Tandoori chicken, naan and curries were standard.
- It wasn’t great, nothing in particular stood out, curries were quite watery.
- Waiting times were too long
- I would come again as its round the corner.
- The worst I have had in HCMC

✅ things we loved:
- Private room
- Chilli chicken starter
- Price

⚠ things to improve:
- Speed of service
- Please don’t serve tomato ketchup
- Thicker sauces please
- Food quality
- The use of no stained tablecloths
- Samosa’s lacked flavour

Review: Papadums Indian Cuisine
Status: Not approved!
Overall score: 6.7/10

In April, the fine members of OCC Saigon laid our review upon Papadums Indian Cuisine - a frustrating visit as the quality of the curry was let down by the lack of organisation in the service.

At first, the OCC were well waited on by the attentive staff, and we felt a warm welcome in the unassuming curry house.

The menu reflected a range of cuisines but the OCC was here for one thing and one thing only... curry.

Overall the curries were good and the poppadoms crispy. The starters had good flavour and were presented nicely. Some curries lacked that spice hit, but most had rich sauces and a good meat to sauce ratio: packed with flavour. The first few beers were deliciously cold.

However, Papadum's service was slow and odd. The rice came out ten minutes after the curries. And the curries came out one by one, not allowing a nice flow to the evening. With a big group, we could only get a little bite before waiting five more minutes for the next curry to come out. We wondered if this is because we are a big group, but a smaller table next to us confirmed a similar experience.

However, when the night was over, the final bill came proving that Papadums is great value for money.

Overall, if Papadums can sort out the delivery of their food from kitchen to table, they would have been certainly approved by us due to the value and quality of the food, and the friendly and welcoming service.

✅ things we loved:
- Great value for the location
- Friendly staff
- Some of the best poppadoms/papadums in the city

Review: Punjabi Indian Restaurant
Status: Approved!
Overall score: 7.33

For March’s meet, OCC Saigon descended upon Punjabi Indian Restaurant in Pham Ngu Lao, and had a pleasant experience!

The food was surprisingly good, with generous portions at a great price. Standouts included the succulent tandoori chicken, crispy pakoras, and delicious keema naan.

Service was friendly and attentive, but had some operational issues, like long wait times and slow table clearing.

The atmosphere is basic and functional, but could use a refresh to elevate the ambiance.

Overall, it's a solid choice for a casual, budget-friendly meal. The beer was cold, which is not always a given in HCMC! While it's not perfect, the good food and value make up for the drawbacks. Would I return? Yes!

Review: Dahi Handi (D1)
Overall score: 7.93

Congratulations to Dahi Handi on being Approved, a strong start to the 2025 OCC season.

Since we reviewed their previous D7 location in March 2023 (and approved it, with a score of 7.37!), the Dahi Handi team has moved to the heart of District 1, and even improved their offering further!

In our opinion Dahi Handi offers great value for money, with generous portions and a wide selection of dishes. We were initially concerned that we had ordered too much, but the final bill was surprisingly reasonable—cheaper than many similar restaurants!

The appetizers were enjoyable, the overall flavours were good, and the restaurant does offer some unique dishes, such as the grilled fish, which help it stand out from competitors. Presentation and service were also strong points.

Visiting on a Friday night (as we always do...) the staff seemed quite busy at times and there were a few service hiccups - despite booking in advance, we had to wait for our table, and there was a slight mix-up with our drinks order. However, the staff were friendly and quick to correct any issues. The restaurant was fairly busy, which might explain the wait times for food! A good sign?

The atmosphere was pleasant but it is narrow and bright - it feels more like a casual lunch spot than a place for a long, lively dinner with friends, although there is a cozier upstairs seating area.

Overall, Dahi Handi is a reliable choice, especially for those looking for a relatively budget-friendly meal, right in the centre of the city, with plenty of options.

While some dishes could be improved in terms of seasoning and portion size, and service could be more attentive, this is a place that has the potential to be excellent on a good day. I would return, hoping to experience it at its best!

✅ things we loved:
