VIETNAM IS ENTERING A NEW RACE IN THE RICE INDUSTRY: NOT JUST SELLING MORE, BUT SELLING BETTER AND REACHING FURTHER.
Amid global rice market fluctuations, falling prices, and increasingly intense competition, Vietnam is accelerating export market diversification through FTAs to reduce reliance on a few major markets.
Although export volume in early 2026 continued to increase, export value declined, clearly reflecting pressure on prices. The Philippines remains Vietnam’s largest rice buyer, while China, Malaysia, and Australia have recorded positive growth. In contrast, exports to some African markets have dropped sharply due to price competition.
What stands out is Vietnam’s growing focus on high-standard markets such as the EU and CPTPP member countries, where FTAs can help Vietnamese rice benefit from tariff preferences while encouraging businesses to improve quality, traceability, branding, and the development of higher-value rice products.
From “exporting more” to “exporting with greater value” this could be a key transition that helps Vietnamese rice strengthen its position on the global food map.
