๐ŸŒฟ Update on Bunbury Wildlife Park ๐ŸŒฟ

While we continue to manage the main building closure, we wanted to share whatโ€™s actually been happening at the park โ€“ because the Wildlife Park is so much more than one building.

Earlier this year, a concealed termite infestation was identified within the main building structure during routine on-site works. The damage, hidden within walls and roof spaces, had caused significant structural deterioration that was not detectable through standard maintenance activities. Following confirmation through structural assessment, the City acted immediately โ€“ closing the building, safely relocating all animals, and commissioning detailed assessments.

We communicated the building closure and structural issues immediately. As assessments have progressed, we are now providing the community with more detail about the cause.

But hereโ€™s the part weโ€™re really proud of, our incredible team has used this time to transform the park experience ๐Ÿ’š

โœ… Established a new park entrance โ€“ designed as a fully integrated visitor arrival experience
โœ… Park grounds rejuvenated (new enclosures, refreshed exhibits, and some exciting new residents, including an adorable family of Squirrel Gliders ๐Ÿฟ๏ธ)
โœ… Conservation programs thriving, including our breeding and species management initiatives
โœ… Keeper Talks running daily โ€“ included in your entry fee
โœ… Overwhelmingly positive visitor feedback

The building is infrastructure. The Wildlife Park is the animals, the keepers, the conservation, and you โ€“ our community. And right now, itโ€™s thriving.
Thank you for your continued support. Come see for yourself!

๐Ÿ™๏ธ Where the City stands ๐Ÿ™๏ธ
Thereโ€™s been a lot of discussion about the proposed relocation of Bunnings to Dalyellup โ€“ so hereโ€™s where the City stands.

We get it โ€“ where Bunnings chooses to invest is a commercial decision, and thatโ€™s theirs to make. But where major developments go still has to stack up against the planning framework, and thatโ€™s where the City has a legitimate role.

Our submission to the State Development Assessment Unit raises real planning concerns about this proposal, particularly the loss of land set aside for housing.

โœ… Weโ€™ve lodged a detailed submission to the State Development Assessment Unit raising significant planning concerns about the proposal โ€“ including the loss of land set aside for housing at a time of real housing demand.
โœ… Mayor Miguel is writing directly to Bunnings and the Planning Minister to advocate for Bunnings to stay in Bunbury.
โœ… Council has asked for a report on how we continue to strengthen and activate our City Centre into the future.
We want Bunnings to stay. But letโ€™s be clear โ€“ Bunburyโ€™s future doesnโ€™t rest on any single business.

Our City Centre is evolving, like every regional centre in the country. Weโ€™re focused on a City Centre thatโ€™s diverse, vibrant and resilient.

Weโ€™re proud of this city, and weโ€™re getting on with the work to build its future ๐Ÿ’š

The Australind train service will be back from 29 June!

Weโ€™re delivering four brand-new Australind trains which will be rolled out in stages.

The first train will hit the tracks in June with more to be added over the months ahead.

To start, youโ€™ll see return services running on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday - with coach services between Bunbury and Perth still running until a second train joins the network in early August.

From there, weโ€™ll keep building - with plans to double the number of services by early next year.

Onboard, there's been a big upgrade - with USB-C charging, an upgraded buffet and more room for bikes.

๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ Well, Bunbury โ€ฆ that was something else ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ
The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed this was the most powerful system to hit the South West since relevant records began in 1977. We felt every bit of it.

We hope you're all safe. We know the apartment building in South Bunbury copped significant damage, and there's a lot of debris, fallen trees and mess across our city.

It's going to take some time to get things back to normal, but we'll get there together.

โš ๏ธ Storm Advice - still current for Bunbury & South Bunbury โš ๏ธ
The damaged roof on that multi-storey apartment building in South Bunbury may remain unstable and could pose a debris hazard.

Please:
๐Ÿ”น Stay away from damaged buildings and structures until they've been assessed as safe
๐Ÿ”น Be careful around fallen trees, damaged branches and storm debris
๐Ÿ”น Stay well clear of fallen power lines โ€“ always assume they are live
๐Ÿ”น Avoid unnecessary travel โ€“ roads and pathways may be obstructed
๐Ÿ”น Keep children and pets away from damaged areas
๐Ÿ”น If you must drive, slow down and drive to conditions

๐Ÿ›๏ธ City facilities โ€“ where things are at ๐Ÿ›๏ธ
Bunbury Visitor Centre โ€“ reopening tomorrow โœ…
Bunbury Museum & Heritage Centre โ€“ reopening tomorrow โœ…
Bunbury Regional Art Gallery โ€“ reopening Wednesday โœ…
South West Sports Centre (gym/facilities) โ€“ pending power restoration this evening, reopening tomorrow 5:45am โœ…
South West Sports Centre (pool) โ€“ closed pending water testing, aiming for Wednesday/Thursday ๐Ÿคž
Bunbury Wildlife Park โ€“ closed for clean-up, aiming to reopen Thursday ๐ŸŒฟ

๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ Storm debris and waste ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ
We know many in our community are dealing with a lot of fallen branches and debris on your properties - we hear you. Our full waste team is back after the public holiday and will be assessing the situation then. We'll keep you updated once we know more.

๐Ÿ’› Supporting our most vulnerable ๐Ÿ’›
We hear you - and we hear the frustration. We know this storm has been particularly frightening for those without a safe place to shelter, and we know more support is needed in our community for people experiencing homelessness.

This is something the City is actively working on with local services and government agencies - not just during emergencies, but longer term. It's complex and we don't have all the answers right now, but we want you to know we're listening and we take it seriously.

If you or someone you know needs urgent housing assistance:
๐Ÿ“ž Crisis Care: 1800 199 008
๐Ÿ“ž Entry Point: 1800 124 684
๐Ÿ“ž Emergency: 000 (if someone's life is in danger)

๐Ÿข Keep an eye out for stranded turtles ๐Ÿข
Our friends at the Dolphin Discovery Centre have let us know that the wild weather may wash marine turtles ashore along South West beaches. Their team has already responded to the first stranded turtle of the season this morning.

If you're walking along the coast over the coming days and spot a stranded turtle:
๐Ÿข Gently pick it up with one hand on either side of the shell
๐Ÿข Place it on a damp towel in an open box or container
๐Ÿข Do NOT put it back in the water
๐Ÿข Do NOT cover it with towels or blankets
๐Ÿข Call for help immediately

๐Ÿ™ Thank you ๐Ÿ™
A huge shout out to our SES volunteers, Western Power crews, emergency services and our own City teams who have been out in horrendous conditions keeping our community safe. We are so grateful for everything you do ๐Ÿ’›
