1945 was a very big year in Bordeaux. Are you in the market for a bottle of '45 Château Latour?

"This is the best bottle of 1945 I have ever tasted in my life," says James Suckling (100/100). "My last note on the 1945 Latour goes back more than fifteen years ago, but I can still taste the wine today if I close my eyes!" writes John Gilman (100/100).

What about Château Lafite Rothschild? Vinous calls it "haunting." How about Château Haut-Brion? "Tasted 5 Times With Consistent Notes. The 1945 Haut-Brion is profound," Robert Parker wrote in 1994 for Robert Parker Wine Advocate. "It is a fabulously rich, monumental example of a fully mature Haut-Brion that exhibits no signs of decline. Awesome!" (100/100).

Introducing the 2018 Pichon Comtesse, a certified biodynamic wine from from Pauillac, Bordeaux, France and Wine Spectator's #2 of their Top 100 of 2021.

Of all the Bordeauxs we've been featuring over the past few weeks, this one might be the true rockstar of the bundle.

"The 2018 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse De Lalande is a monster of a wine," says JebDunnuck.com, "with an almost Château Latour-like stature and structure, offering deep, backward, slightly reductive notes of blackcurrants, crushed stone, scorched earth, lead pencil shavings, and to***co leaf. Based largely on Cabernet Sauvignon mixed with 23% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, it's full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful on the palate, with masses of tannin's, beautiful mid-palate density, and a great finish... This 2018 is going to need 5-7 years of bottle age and will evolve for 40+ years." Rated 98+!

It may be Monday, but it's no time to snooze on these last two bottles of one of our favorite wines, the 2016 Dominio de Pingus PSI Tempranillo!

From celebrated winemaker Peter Sisseck, the man behind one of the world's most coveted wines, PIngus, comes the extremely affordable and delicious 2016 PSI Tempranillo.

"Having established Pingus as a new benchmark for greatness in Spanish wine, Peter Sisseck has embarked on a new quest: to produce a wine that captures the soul of Ribera del Duero. And he intends to do so by harnessing the passion of the region’s growers who have, for far too long, lacked the tools, capital, and vision to make wine that is truly 'theirs.' And thus PSI was born.

"It is a Utopian idea, born of Peter's passionate belief in organic and biodynamic farming as well as his gratitude to the region for giving a young Danish winemaker the opportunity to make arguably Spain's most coveted wine."

We have another seductive, seamless, and elegant new vintage in this week from Château La Gaffelière—the 2018 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru.

Antonio Galloni of Vinous sums up this slightly more affordable yet still stunning Bordeaux blend:

"The 2018 Canon La Gaffelière is bright, punchy and full of character, just as it was from barrel. Sage, blood orange, mocha and spice add pretty aromatic top notes to a core of inky red/purplish berry fruit. All the elements are so well balanced in this super-expressive Saint-Émilion. Bright floral and savory Franc notes punctuate the salivating finish, mineral-drenched finish. The 2018 needs a lot of air to open, but when it does, it is dynamite." Rated 97 Points.

We have another outstanding new arrival to share this week! Introducing the 2018 Château Cos d'Estournel, a sublime Bordeaux-blend from Saint-Estèphe.

Rated 98 to 98+ by Robert Parker Wine Advocate, James Suckling, and JebDunnuck.com. This is a world-class rockstar of a wine we don't expect to last long, except in the cellar where it's good for 40+ years of aging. We can't really say enough about how exceptional this wine is, and neither can Mr. Dunnuck.

"An incredible wine from this estate that's as good as anything in the vintage... While some 2018s are going to offer pleasure right out of the gate, this isn't one of them, but rather it's a backward, tannic powerhouse of a wine that has flawless balance as well as a level of purity that's off the charts. Thrilling crème de cassis fruit, notes of lead pencil, damp earth, cedarwood, violets, and acacia flowers, full-bodied richness, masses of ultra-fine tannins, and a great, great finish all make for a legendary Saint-Estèphe that will need a good decade of bottle age yet evolve for 50 years or more. If you are tempted to try a bottle in its youth, it needs lots of air."

Take your senses for a ride with the magnificent and powerful 2017 Château Pichon Baron.

Château Pichon Baron probably takes the prize for the top vintage of 2017 in the Pauillac appellation. Composed of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot aged 18 months in 80% new French oak.

Average critical score: 96. JebDunnuck.com sums it up nicely.

"The 2017 Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron sports a vivid purple hue as well as gorgeous notes of creme de cassis and black raspberry fruits interwoven with classic Pauillac lead pencil, crushed rocks, chocolate, and violet notes. Full-bodied and concentrated, yet elegant and seamless, it has remarkable purity, flawless tannins, beautifully integrated acidity, and a great finish. It's going to hit the early stages of prime drinking in 7-8 years and cruise for 20-25 years or more."

Clocking in at a price tag barely above the 99 point rating awarded by James Suckling, the Domaine de Chevalier 2018 Pessac-Leognan is one of the best wine deals of the year.

"The intensity and perfumes on the nose are extremely impressive," Suckling writes, "offering pure blackberries and violets, as well as bark, wild-mushroom and raw-tile notes. It’s full-bodied with creamy tannin's that envelop the wine and a gorgeous, subtly complex center palate with all the flavors found on the nose. Endless finish. Love the finesse and length to this. GREATEST EVER. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot and 5% petit verdot. Try after 2026."

James Suckling rates it #25 in his Top 100 Wines of 2021.

Happy ! 🍸

In the 1700s, a Scottish doctor, George Cleghorn discovered that quinine could treat malaria, and by the end of the 1800s, British soldiers were drinking tonic and gin for their daily dose of the “medicine.” The key to this simple cocktail is quality craft gin, like AMASS, made at The Spirit Guild in the Arts District of Downtown LA.

Keep your Saturday simple and refreshing: Fill a highball glass with ice, then add 2 oz. gin, 4 oz. tonic water, and gently stir. Garnish with lime wheels or any seasonal ingredient of your choice. Lastly, and very important, enjoy! 🥂

Somehow, not sure exactly why, we've all become big fans of wines named "Armand"... 🧐😂

And it's always a treat when a wine lives up to the name. But none to our knowledge is more delightful than Weingut Reichsrat von Buhl 2013 Armand Riesling Kabinett VDP. Gutswein. With a fruity apricot nose and spectacular fireworks of acidity, spirit and minerality on the palate, the Armand Riesling never fails to astound top testers both in Germany and abroad.

Armand blew judges away in 2019, where the 2016 vintage took home five titles at Sommeliers Choice Awards, including “White Wine of the Year”, “White Wine of the Year by the Glass”, “Wine of the Year By the Glass”, “Wine of the Year By Country (Germany)” and “Wine of The Year By Varietal (Riesling)” 🤤
