Description:
Prickly Pears, how to describe them? How about the big huge cactus you fell on when you were little and your parents had to remove the needles from you with tweezers? The cactus known as Prickly Pear or "Optunia" which originated in the Mojave Desert, but can now be found almost anywhere in the U.S. and/or Mexico, are a beautiful cacti that bear fruit during the summer and fall months once the cacti has reached 10 lbs in weight. Growing Process:
The cacti typically grow flat, rounded pads that are armed with two kinds of spines; large, smooth, fixed spines and small, hairlike prickles called glochids, that easily penetrate skin and detach from the plant. Many types of prickly pears grow into dense, tangled structures as well. They are also very rapid growers and will start growing immediately once rooted and can be manipulated to grow in any direction the care giver wishes but usually spread wide and low as they grow. Left unattended however, the cacti can grow up to 15 ft tall and wide and make it hard to harvest the fruits. Flowers of are a brilliant yellow and open in mid-summer. They are followed by edible purple or red fruits, called tunas. These are the prickly pears. Health Benefits:
The fruits are full of antioxidants and are highly nutritious and can be used to make jelly's, ice cream, drinks, and even shampoos. The pads themselves are also edible and are commonly used in many Mexican dishes. The pads and the fruits can both be dropped into blenders and turned into cactus juice which is a delicacy in many parts of the world. Hardiness:
This cactus is so hardy that it can grow in zone 2 all the way to zone 10! They are the easiest plants to care for as well and require little to no tending too and once fully rooted can survive off adequate rainfall alone or if there isn't enough adequate rainfall, watering once every three weeks is fine. They are also very disease resistant and drought resistant. The most common problem with these is over watering since they don't require much of it. In the winter time these will shrivel up just a bit but it no sign of the plant dieing so no need to worry. Ordering:
