Over the weekend, we were delighted to host members of the Association of Women in Fisheries Kenya - A W F B E K at our processing plant as we shared experiences and explored opportunities to strengthen women led participation across the fisheries value chain.

Today is an exciting day at Rio Fish.

Our team is carrying out fish sampling and stock allocations for four of our partner groups: YISA, OSoi Aqua, Luor Ber, A Team, and Lakeside. These activities help monitor fish growth, inform management decisions, and ensure every group is well positioned for the next stage of production.

More importantly, days like today showcase what sustainable aquaculture is all about. By providing access to infrastructure, technical support, and practical knowledge, we are helping women and youth build thriving aquaculture enterprises that strengthen livelihoods and contribute to Kenya's growing blue economy.

Every day, including weekends, our team is on site ensuring our tilapia receive the nutrition they need to grow into healthy, high quality fish. Consistent feeding is one of the foundations of sustainable aquaculture, supporting fish health, efficient growth, and responsible resource use.

It is also an investment in people. Many of the young professionals caring for our cages are building valuable skills and livelihoods through hands on experience in aquaculture.

How do fish farmers know their stock is growing as expected?

The answer is sampling.

At our fingerling cages, regular sampling allows us to monitor growth rates, assess fish health, and make informed management decisions. During the process, a small number of fish are carefully collected, weighed, and measured before being safely returned to the cage.

These routine checks help us understand whether feeding programs are working effectively, track growth performance, and ensure the fish are developing as expected. The data collected also helps guide decisions on feeding rates, stocking density, and future production planning.

While it may seem like a small activity, sampling is one of the most important tools in modern aquaculture. Good decisions come from good information, and good information comes from consistent monitoring.

Every healthy harvest begins months earlier with activities like these: careful observation, accurate record keeping, and a commitment to understanding what is happening beneath the water's surface.
