Turn off the news and build a garden
Just my neighborhood and me
We might feel a bit less hardened
We might feel a bit more free
Turn off the news and raise your kids
Give them something to believe in
Teach them how to be good people
Give them hope that they can see

Six more weeks of winter?

We've never felt confident in Phil's predictions on whether there will be an early spring. Over the years we've made more than one "rookie" mistake based on misleading warm, early spring days leading us to believe that Phil was spot on, only to have us scrambling to cover plants the week of Mother’s Day.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac is predicting a “sloth-like” spring.

SLOTH-LIKE SPRING AHEAD
“While this astronomical milestone signals winter’s end, the meteorological reality tells a slower story this year. Much like its namesake, spring is expected to arrive at an unhurried pace—taking its time before fully stretching into warmth.”

Then as if to add insult to injury, NOAA is predicting 2026 to be of the top four hottest years on record – with 2024, 2023, and 2025 next (ranked in order).

What does this mean for our farmers?
Rather than wait to find out if predictions are true, we’re taking a pro-active approach to this growing season that will also begin the next chapter of our story. We’ve been testing newer hybrids that are disease and drought tolerant over the past few seasons, and while we still love heirlooms, there will be fewer in our future to ensure harvests stay bountiful and worthy of our effort. We’re going back to our roots, and our focus will shift away from commercial production and more toward subsistence agriculture.

Will there be pumpkins? Absolutely, and The Boss has already picked out many of the varieties we’ll plant together this year! This season’s fruit and vegetable side of growing will transition back to our humble beginnings to support more food preservation, meals and goodies prepared with whole foods from our gardens for our families.

What will you plant this year?

As always, thank you all for being a part of our story. ❤

Just like a single drop creates endless ripples across the water, every genuine act of love and compassion spreads further than we realize. So today, be the drop. Offer a smile. Say something kind. Show a little grace — not because you're expecting anything in return, but because the world could always use more light. You never know how far your ripple will travel.

Prior to refrigerated transportation, large flocks were “trotted” 10 miles per day to market. Lead turkeys wore bells to help herders track them. Corn scattered along the route kept the birds moving.

Thanks to Murray McMurray Hatchery and Metzer Farms for sponsoring Celebrating 250 Turkey Month.
