Zero eggs today! The girls are slowing down as the days get shorter, and I've already wrapped up egg sales for the season.

Hoping for just a few eggs a week to get us through winter. Because I'm not about to eat store-bought eggs! 😲

Same wagon, different time of year.

One loaded with the goodies our garden gave us, the other loaded with what’s left after the garden season. It's heading to the compost pile.

It’s always a bit sad to see this season come to an end, but I am already planning next year!

The garden cleanup looked easy enough until I started counting wagon loads.

Tomato plants, watermelon vines, sunflower stalks... and that was just the beginning. Half the cleanup was last weekend, the rest this weekend. I think the garden and I are officially ready for a break.

I decided I needed a little more dried mint to get me through the winter with my lemon balm tea, so out I went for one more small cutting.

Mint cut, washed, dried and tucked away!

And now the dehydrator is officially put away.
I think I’m finally done preserving this year’s garden.
Until I think of something else I need.

Do you prefer dehydrating or freeze drying?

Evening shift change at the farm. Or is it?

I provide door service and dinner. So what do YOU think?

A) I’m putting the cats to bed.

B) The cats are training me to serve dinner.

Things are getting pretty brittle and dried up in the garden, and I’m having a hard time catching those last few tomatoe...

Things are getting pretty brittle and dried up in the garden, and I’m having a hard time catching those last few tomatoes at just the right time.

If I leave them until they’re fully red, I seem to find them a day too late — bruised, squooshy and already discovered by bugs.

So I pick them while they’re still green, giving them a good wash and bringing them inside.

I just spread them out on my kitchen island and let them ripen at room temperature. As they turn red, I grab them and use them. The green ones keep working their way toward red, so I always have a few ready to go.

As the tomato season comes to an end, this works out perfectly for me. And I’d much rather have a firm, perfectly ripened tomato from my counter than a bug-eaten one left on the vine!

A little end-of-season tomato trick that works for me. What tricks work for you?

Ummm… isn’t this supposed to happen in May?!

Apparently lilacs can occasionally bloom again in the fall, especially after stressful growing conditions - which we have DEFINITELY have had. So after the heat, humidity and CRAZY amount of rain we’ve had this year, I guess my lilac decided October needed a little color. 💜

I’m enjoying it while it lasts, even though it may mean fewer blooms next spring.

Anyone else experiencing any weird “what season is it?” behavior in their gardens this year?

I was looking at my farm page cover photo - that I haven't changed out yet for fall. The one filled with my beautiful echinacea and my little garden flag that welcomes visitors with a playful black cat surrounded by sunflowers. You know, showing off my front landscaping in all its spring glory.

And then I looked out the front window — currently.

The last couple of weeks, all I’ve really noticed is DEAD.

The flower petals are all gone, the leaves are fading, and my echinacea are standing there with their dark little seed heads at the end of long, bare stems. They almost look like something out of a Halloween movie — like something haunting.

It’s still deceptively sunny and warm out. So the landscape looks dead while the weather is pretending it’s not quite ready to let go.

And honestly? I am.

I’m ready for a change of season. I’m more than ready to be done with the heat, humidity and especially the seemingly endless rain we’ve had lately. I’m looking forward to crisp fall days, and yes… even winter (snow ❤ gasp!).

But there’s something very strange about watching the beautiful landscape that had me so excited in the spring slowly fade away.

I guess that’s gardening. Everything has its season.

Even the creepy black echinacea heads.
