Our next target was the iconic Red Hartebeest, but the Karoo wasn’t making it easy. One afternoon we found ourselves in an electrical storm with lightning striking all around us. Standing in the open with rifles and an aluminium Bog-Pod suddenly didn’t seem like the smartest idea, so we made a rapid retreat to camp!

After the rain cleared, we located the herd we’d been following and spotted several mature bulls feeding on a distant slope. We stalked in, but the herd kept moving, eventually stopping at around 450 metres.

Jim settled prone, made an excellent shot, and dropped a beautiful Red Hartebeest bull. We were so fired up we discussed and agreed that if another bull happened to present himself, that the outfitter and guide would also take one - not seriously thinking that nature would reward us twice… but we were wrong. As we admired the first bull, another mature bull stepped out even farther away. We could not believe it and our outfitter jumped at the opportunity! Two great bulls and a majorly successful day.

After days of rain, lightning, and persistence, the Karoo finally rewarded us with two magnificent Red Hartebeest bulls. A hunt we’ll never forget.

Fresh off the success of the wildebeest hunt, we decided it was time to pursue one of the Eastern Cape’s most iconic mountain dwellers—the elusive klipspringer.
Our guide, Andrew, had a particular ram in mind. He spoke of an old warrior that had haunted the rocky slopes for years, a mature animal he knew well and had watched season after season. Before first light, we made our way into the mountains and climbed onto a koppie overlooking the ram’s territory. The morning was bitterly cold, and a thick blanket of mist clung to the valleys below as we settled behind the binoculars and began glassing.
As the sun slowly pushed through the mist, the mountain came alive. Then, suddenly, there he was.
The old ram stood proudly on a distant koppie, basking in the first rays of sunlight alongside two females. Even at nearly 500 metres away, his quality was unmistakable. The hunt was on.
Carefully, we began our stalk, negotiating a steep and unforgiving cliff face to close the distance. Every step had to be deliberate; one misplaced foothold could send rocks tumbling and alert the animals. After a challenging descent and careful approach, we managed to position Mr. Jim at approximately 330 metres.
Now it was a waiting game.
The wind swirled through the mountains, refusing to settle. Finally, a brief window presented itself. The distance was dialled into the scope, the rifle steadied, and Mr. Jim squeezed the trigger.
The crack of the .300 Winmag echoed across the valley.
A moment later, the ram collapsed where he stood.
The bullet had struck perfectly, just behind the shoulder and beneath the armpit, avoiding heavy bone and preserving the trophy.
Field preparation began immediately as they are prone to hair slip if not done correctly. With trophy quality always our highest priority, the animal was carefully processed and packed into a cooler filled with ice to ensure perfect preservation.
The measurements confirmed what we already suspected—a superb Rowland Ward klipspringer, stretching an impressive 4 and a quarter inches. A true mountain monarch and a magnificent representative !
It was a hunt none of us would soon forget.

Day two began bright and early at 5:30 a.m. With over 25,000 acres of rugged Karoo terrain to cover, we knew there would be no shortage of ground to search. Having already secured the Black Wildebeest, our focus shifted to the remaining two animals on Mr. Jim’s wish list—the elusive Royal Wildebeest and King Wildebeest that roamed this vast property.
The morning started with a climb up a small koppie where we spent nearly an hour glassing the open plains below. Despite our efforts, there was no sign of the special bulls we were after. Standing atop the hill and looking across the endless landscape, we quickly realized the enormity of the task ahead.
Undeterred, we moved on to a second vantage point. After about thirty minutes of careful glassing, a flash of movement caught our attention. There, at the base of the hill, a lone wildebeest was making its way along a narrow game trail.
The excitement was immediate.
We hurried down the hillside and began our stalk, carefully keeping the wind and terrain in our favor. As the bull crossed a nearby road, we raced ahead, tucked ourselves behind a bush, and settled into position. Lying prone and waiting patiently, we watched as the magnificent animal stepped into an opening at approximately 120 meters.
Mr. Jim steadied himself behind the bipod and squeezed the trigger.
The crack of the .300 Win Mag echoed across the valley, and the bull dropped on the spot—a perfect shot.
As we approached, the true beauty of the animal became clear. Before us lay a stunning Royal Wildebeest, a Rowland Ward trophy with incredible coloration and striking features. It was an exceptional specimen and, remarkably, the first Royal Wildebeest we had ever guided on.
With the Black Wildebeest already in the salt and the Royal Wildebeest now successfully taken, Mr. Jim had completed two-thirds of his wildebeest slam in just a day and a half. The excitement was building, and with only the King Wildebeest left on the list, the hunt was far from over.

Jim and Michelle, two wonderful returning clients, wanted to experience a taste of Cape Town before the hunt began. After an unforgettable few days exploring the beauty of the Mother City, we wasted no time heading north into the vast, unforgiving landscapes of the Karoo — a dramatic contrast to the bushveld of Limpopo.

With rifles sighted in and spirits high, we set out across the endless open plains, scanning the rugged, rocky terrain for our first opportunity. Before long, two magnificent Black Wildebeest bulls appeared, cresting a distant hill like dark ghosts against the skyline. The excitement was immediate — the hunt was on.

We drove as close as the terrain would allow before beginning our slow ascent on foot. Reaching the first ridge only revealed more ground to cover as we crossed the valley below and climbed a second hill in pursuit of the bulls. Every step through the rocky Karoo demanded patience and silence.

Finally, we spotted them again moving through the descending valley below us. The wind was perfect. Everything was in our favour.

Using the folds of the terrain to stay concealed, we carefully closed the distance. At first, the bulls stood at nearly 600 metres — too far for a clear and clean shot. We eased forward slowly, taking every opportunity the landscape offered until we reached 400 metres.

Jim settled in behind the death-grip Bog Pod, the .300 Win Mag loaded with 180-grain bullets resting steady on target. The tension was thick as the bull paused broadside.

The shot broke cleanly through the still Karoo air.

The bullet struck perfectly on the shoulder — a devastating heart shot — and the phenomenal trophy bull dropped instantly where he stood.

The valley erupted with excitement and relief. A spectacular Black Wildebeest bull on the very first day of the hunt, earned through determination, patience, and a flawless shot. It was the perfect start to what promised to be an unforgettable safari.

Alfonso had said from the start that if we came across a true trophy impala, there would be no hesitation — we had to take it. Then, along the banks of the Kapong River, he appeared and we knew he was the perfect specimen.

Standing with two other rams just before the rut, this magnificent impala carried everything you hope to find in a mature old ram: stunning horns, perfect symmetry, and the kind of presence that instantly stops you in your tracks. The tension in the air was electric as Alfonso settled in for the shot.

What followed was pure precision. One fantastic shot rang out across the riverbed, and in that moment the stunning ram was ours — an unforgettable trophy and a hunt none of us will soon forget and a great end to a fantastic hunt at Monterra Safaris

A big waterbuck bull was high on our list. We did a thorough search in the bush every day, but we didn’t give up hope. We held our breaths when we spotted this monster walking through the thicket. Calming our racing hearts we tried to find the perfect shot opportunity but this bull didn’t get this big for nothing. He was not stopping for anything and we knew we were going to miss our opportunity if we don’t act fast. We set up Alfonso on the sticks and he had to take a moving shot as the bull came past. Even though it was a good shot these animals are tough and the waterbuck ran off. We were not letting this one go, we ended up trekking the bull for 2 hours until we finally got him in a dry river bed. A hard day’s hunt and an animal worth the stalk - this is what we live for 💪🏼

Hunting is more than conservation — it is an ancient tradition woven through generations, a way of life and a coming of age passed from father to son for centuries. Sadly, in some parts of the world, this heritage is slowly being stripped away, with laws pushing the age of hunting higher and higher, threatening a culture built on family, respect for nature, and hard-earned experience.

That is why this hunt at Monterra Safaris meant so much.

Alfonso and Andrés were over the moon to share this timeless tradition together. Long before sunrise, the team set out into the bush, anticipation thick in the cool morning air. Then, through the vegetation, they spotted him — a magnificent impala ram. One look and we knew he was the one.

But this would not come easy.

For Andres, this was a true first hunt. Every step had to be earned. Moving carefully through thick bush, he crawled slowly and silently alongside his father and the PH, every movement measured, every sound amplified in the stillness of the veld. Every moment he was learning from two experienced hunters.

As the distance closed, so did the pressure.

Excitement threatened to take over, but the team stayed focused, shutting out every distraction and concentrating fully on the task ahead. Finally, they were close enough.

Slowly, Andrés eased onto the sticks.

One deep breath.

One steady squeeze.

And with an excellent shot, the ram dropped on the spot.

An unforgettable moment.

Watching father and son share this revered experience was something truly special. Hunting teaches far more than marksmanship — it tests patience, endurance, discipline, self-control, and determination. It shapes character. It teaches a young man to respect nature, appreciate the outdoors, set goals, and understand the value of working for what he earns — even his own meat.

We are incredibly proud to have facilitated such a meaningful experience and look forward to many more adventures together in the future.

Congratulations, Andrés!

Today we celebrate our mothers far and wide ! Regardless of race, cultures or heritage, a mother is the fabric woven between every family member, creating a beautiful tapestry of love, growth, support and wisdom. Thank you to all the moms who support your family’s hunting passion and thank you to the moms who hunt themselves - setting an example for the next generation on what true conservation looks like and that one shouldn’t always listen to the noise of the “status quo” as Laurel Thatcher put it - “Well behaved women seldom make history.” Happy Mother’s Day from the Monterra Team .
