We have just come through an intense heatwave, combined with strong south easterly winds, which is extremely hard on lawns. During these conditions, water is only available to the plant for a very short period due to rapid evaporation, which is why longer watering cycles are often the only way to keep a lawn in reasonable condition at this time of year.

Going forward, this will ease as the days become shorter and watering becomes more effective. There is still plenty of heat in the system, so a good compost application together with a consistent irrigation program will make a noticeable difference. For now, I recommend watering for around 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes after 6 pm, but not later than 8 pm, continuing this through to April. Give your lawn a lawn dressing. When you apply the dressing, be sure not to cover any green leaf, make sure it lies below the leaf so it does not suffocate the lawn.

Mow once a week at a higher setting and try not to miss a week. Often the stress is likely a combination of insufficient water and a long lawn being cut short, which results in burn.
