French press coffee is simple, but small details make a big difference.

The grind needs to be coarse.

The ratio needs to be balanced.

The brew needs time.

The press needs patience.

When done properly, French press gives you a warm, full-bodied cup that feels perfect for a slow winter morning.

Start with coarse grounds, use about 4 tablespoons for 600ml of water, bloom first, steep for 4 minutes, press slowly, and pour straight away.

That last step matters. Leaving brewed coffee in the French press can make it taste bitter.

Fresh coffee matters, but coffee does not always taste best the moment it has been roasted.

After roasting, coffee beans release gas. This is completely normal, but if you brew the beans too soon, the flavour can taste sharp, uneven, sour, or slightly harsh.

That is why many coffees benefit from a short resting period before brewing.

A simple guide:
For filter coffee, give freshly roasted beans a few days to settle.

For espresso, the coffee may need a little longer because pressure makes extraction more sensitive.

Instead of only checking the expiry date, look for the roast date. That tells you much more about where the coffee is in its flavour window.

The goal is simple: buy fresh coffee, store it well, and brew it when the flavour has had time to open up.
