Speaker of Parliament, Sameer Suleman, has pledged to serve with dedication and impartiality.

In his acceptance speech, Suleman called on Members of Parliament to rise above partisan politics, stressing that Malawi’s economic challenges and food insecurity require collective effort to address.

He pledged to uphold the dignity of the House and thanked President Peter Mutharika for the trust placed in him.

Suleman defeated Peter Dimba of the Malawi Congress Party, Lasten Vigaro, and Sandram Scot in the race for the position.

He thanked MPs for their confidence in his leadership, saying Malawians expect integrity, unity, and decorum in the conduct of parliamentary affairs.

Suleman also promised to lead with impartiality, ensuring that all views are respected and accountability prevails in the House.

The country's first Islamic University has been launched in the country and it is called IQRA’A University and it is located at the old Motel Paradise site in Blantyre.

Professor Alfred Matiki, Vice Principal of IQRA’A University, stated that the university is founded on Islamic values but is open to students of all religious backgrounds.

Iqbal Makda, Secretary General of the UK-based Dedza Welfare Trust, which sponsors the university together with Bilal Trust said they decided to start sponsoring secular education to support government efforts in national development.

IQRA’A University is awaiting assessment results from the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).

Liwonde Market in Machinga district has been facing a prolonged electricity outage for over ten years, a development which is negatively impacting on vendors ability to conduct businesses, especially at night.

The Chairperson for Liwonde Market, Abudu M'bisa, expressed frustration that the council is failing to resolve the issue despite numerous complaints lodged.

M'bisa also says that the market lacks toilet facilities posing health risks to vendors and customers rendering it prone to potential cholera outbreaks

In his remarks Spokesperson for the district council, Leonard Masuli says the council is aware of the issues affecting Liwonde Market and is working on the strategies to address them.

Malawi National Women's Football, the Scorchers, have qualified for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following a 2-nil win over Angola at the Bingu National Stadium.

This will be a maiden appearance for the Scorchers at the tournament.

Faith Chimzimu scored a brace.The tournament will be held in Morocco.
